That model is a marketing display for Silverstein Properties, so I guess they just don't have much reason to diligently update the 1WTC model since the building itself does not belong to them.

Its sad to look at lower Manhattan and think about how grand and soaring it was back in the day. I'm glad they're finally building this second tower, as its been a quarter century, but man, what a missed opportunity. The downtown skyline, even after this is completed, will look so weak compared to what it was pre-9/11. Oh well, c'est la vie.

As you stated “such is life” yes, the stage lights are now focused on Midtown. However, when I think back commuting by ferry from New Jersey the Chase Manhattan building was the highlight of the downtown skyline. It has plateaued at a substantially higher level than it did back then. Time will tell as to what type of a neighborhood downtown evolves into. But I have to say when I leave New York Harbor and arrive back on cruise ships the passengers on board still gape at the skyline and they’re not looking at Midtown, they are focused on the downtown skyline. Commercially it’s not written off yet, and it anchors a lot of the financial strength that this country thrives on, so I am hopeful it will resurrect itself at some point in the future.

I don't think so. There's been so much built Downtown since, with more on the way.

The 2 World Trade Center, which will replace the second building of the original twin towers that were destroyed during the September 11 attacks in 2001, has entered a new phase of construction, marking a major milestone in the decades-long redevelopment of Lower Manhattan.

Earlier this month, the 2 World Trade Center officially broke ground at 200 Greenwich Street. Designed by Foster + Partners and developed by Silverstein Properties, the 55-story skyscraper will rise 1,226 feet and become the future global headquarters of American Express. The tower, which forms the final piece of the World Trade Center site, is expected to be completed by 2031.


Sharing an aerial image of the current construction site of the 2 World Trade Center, which was taken today, a member of the team behind the project told Newsweek: “The next milestone will be when the building reaches its top height, which will be in 2029, when the steel tops out.”

Construction has accelerated because much of the underground work was completed years ago during the development of the wider World Trade Center complex, including the Oculus transportation hub. The project team said the 2 World Trade Center "got a head start" because no additional foundation work was required, and that the focus is now simply to "build up."

The tower will contain three large outdoor terraces at different levels, alongside six additional covered gardens, or loggias, placed throughout the structure. The project team member described the concept as “a very unusual thing to have in any tall office building,” noting there is more outdoor space within the tower than the amount of land occupied by the building itself.

I wonder if they are swamp white oaks, the same as at the Memorial.

Those trees will live for centuries.

Terrorists are inventive and have all the time in the world so I highly doubt it.

I threw together a real quick massing model just to try to visualize what this would look like "square" from the harbor. From what I've seen, it looks like the second-from-highest roof (the top of the tube adjacent/east of the tallest tube) of 2 WTC is about the same height as the top 3 WTC, give or take. My rendering pushes that roof line a little lower because tower 2 is further from the camera than tower 3.

Please ignore my very inaccurate facade. I just threw it together really quick, and I tried my best to consider perspective and the footprint. It's my best attempt.

Does this look close? Or have I missed the mark?

Partially the angle, and the occupied height and main roof are not that much above 3WTC unfortunately. The big cube in the corner is what pushes it noticeably higher.

I really hope some ~450 meter buildings get underway in Midtown soon and that maybe some other US cities can build tall just given what's going up globally.
