About 450 units total.
The Gateway Towers will add about another 300 units.
The net result is an entirely new neighbourhood in an area of the city that was quite literally "on the wrong side of the (CN) tracks."
The main impetus for this construction was the building of the Avenir Centre about three blocks from here on the site of the former Highfield Square Mall. This had been the home of the city's Eatons (and subsequently) Bay stores. Most wags thought it folly to build an 8800 seat arena in the core of the city (but where will people park!!!), but people found a way, and since the Avenir Centre was built, literally $300-400M of new residential construction has occurred (midrise to the north of Main Street and the Three Sisters to the south). In addition a Hyatt Place Hotel and a Four Points by Sheraton have been built within a block of the Avenir Centre, and a pre-existing Crowne Plaza has been renovated.
The same developer who built the Three Sisters is also building the Gateway Towers. These towers will back onto the Riverfront Park along the bank of the Petitcodiac River. Both of these two developments have or will have strong commercial podiums with many higher end amenities to support the resident population, including a European grocery store, several restaurants, a private art gallery and a couple of spas.
The Gateway will border on the popular Riverfront Trail, and, a brew pub has already committed to occupying a portion of the podium of the building facing the trail with a large outdoor patio.
The entire Riverfront Park will be renovated with numerous amenities planned, including a possible performing arts facility on the east side of the park. The park in effect will be bookended by the Gateway Towers to the west and the performing arts centre to the east.
Across the street from the performing arts centre will be the planned Downing Street project, which will feature a pedestrianized street lined by a relocated city market, a convention centre, and a tower perhaps as high as 30 storeys. Another hotel may be located here.
The intent is to create a riverfront nearly as attractive and appealing as the Halifax boardwalk area along their harbourfront
Of course all this will take decades to develop, but, the city has a plan.........
