The crown is for both aesthetic and functional. It provides a signature look while hiding mechanical. The distinctive cutouts in the crown structures allow for natural ventilation while preventing wind from causing severe downdrafts at the street level.

I fancy the design, but reportedly they are festering dumps.

Yeah the Ice Towers have had too many police and EMS calls over the years... even body bags have been required.

Ice Condos are hives of scum and villainy? I wouldn't have guessed. Anyways I can't decide if I like the roof top crowns or not.

Apparently they've improved a fair bit but for a time had a huge percentage of units used solely for airbnb. With some rentals and a few unlucky owner-occupied units thrown in. So it was parties all the time plus some more unsavoury stuff going on in said short-term rental units.

While I'm sure there's still a fair number of (illegal) short-term rentals the regulations against airbnb have helped. Including a lawsuit against the former Board Director who owned a ton of units. Elevator situation is still probably not great.

Wasn't it ICE where the infamous chair throwing incident occurred? I still remember the news scandal surrounding that.

East Village (even in its current unfinished state) is the main place I take any visitors to Calgary. Nice shot!

I take people there too, but mainly along the river pathway, passing by the DIC quickly, and then over to the Library and Studio Bell.

East Village looking great! Will be nice as it fills in more, but a world of difference from 20 years ago. And avoided most of the architectural atrocities that plague the Downtown West End.

That was actually across the street at Maple Leaf Square condos. Which had many of the same issues as ICE!

After a period with not much activity, it's starting to take off again, hopefully this time it sticks. There are three buildings that just recently broke ground, with another that's supposed to break ground this summer. Fingers crossed.

That's a great looking waterfront. Nice mix of man-made and natural features on the water's edge, generous public space, and an interesting mix of human-scaled buildings that compliment rather than dominate their context.

I’m in your fair city and was visiting East Village yesterday. Kudos to Calgarians for all the changes to downtown Calgary. I’m impressed with the amount of change since my visits years ago.

Depending when you last visited the city may have doubled in size.
