Ottawa approves new annual authorisation for all-night dance events
Mon, 29 Jun 2026
A new motion passed by Ottawa City Council allows for year-round authorisation to hold all-night dance events.
Previously, venues and organisers were required to apply for a separate license for each individual all-night dance event (any music event held between 3 AM and 9 AM). Now, venues can apply annually for an authorisation, granted they abide by a set of safety, insurance and filing requirements.
"This removes barriers to experimentation, strengthens our creative ecosystem, benefits emerging local artists and creative workers and moves Ottawa closer to a 24-hour city model that can compete as an international destination," said nightlife commissioner Mathieu Grondin in a statement.
The by-law was first recommended by the city's nightlife council, which was founded in late 2024 and consists of a group of 18 volunteer members from the nightlife community. It's the latest in the city's Nightlife Economy Action Plan, which sets to reduce red tape for nightlife and support nighttime economic growth.
