Melt the Arlington bridge. There's an underpass at McPhillips and a nice bridge at Salter. That's plenty. Expand those if needed.

Don't go spending $100's of millions rebuilding a 600m bridge over railyard that should be moved in the first place.

For those nostalgia chasers saying "but it's part of our heritage". Cry harder. Get over it. Life moves on. So should you.

Turn it into a ped bridge and call it a day. I like it. Honestly that’s the best I think isnever going to happen at this point in Winnipeg’s mid term fiscal picture without bold tax hikes.

I'm inclined to agree, especially since it is part of a major cycling root, but can it be made safe as a pedestrian/cyclist bridge without spending many many millions?

That's exactly the issue. Bomberjet can probably attest more as an engineer.

But to me if metal is too rotten to drive on, it's too rotten for any use safely. Rust is like cancer. Once it starts you can't stop it. You can only melt'r down and rebuild fresh.

If it's rusted beyond repair, then by all means tear it down.

Just need to replace it with something to take its place. The proposals from several years ago looked good. However, if we are putting an AT bridge as a replacement, then the McPhillips underpass and Slaw Rebchuk bridge, along with the routes leading up to them will need to be adjusted for vehicle traffic.

It's nice to see the city prioritizing the bridge reconstruction. It's not sexy but it's an important piece of the North Winnipeg road network.

Proposed funding for demolition and early works is there. They plan to blow it up but do not have approval from the railway on how exactly they'll do it.

I don't think using explosives would be a good idea anyway for obvious reasons either.

With an active rail yard below, it would be an extreme challenge to dismantle the superstructures itself, the decks, and the piers, all with an active rail yard below. They would have to work very closely with CPKC to help coordinate demolition efforts while diverting rail traffic away from the demo areas.

This will not be an easy task for anyone.

The proposed plan is to strip it down completely leave only the steel. Blow it up and remove everything within IIRC 48 hours. They'd cover the track with crane pads and track ballast.

Lifting the spans off is risky as theyll fall apart. Same thing happened with disraeli when removing the old girders. It's in CPKC best interest to play along before the whole thing collapses on the live track.

A real travesty would be the bridge collapsing on passing train, killing the crew and sparking a massive explosion in urban Winnipeg.

Current design standards have lifespans on things, especially bridges. 75 design life is typical. This isn't the Eifel Tower. Rather a bridge over a railyard that has outlived it's life.

^ the travesty is that is was closed and is not being replaced. That was a very handy link over the railyards for those of us that live/work/play in that area of the City.

Hopefully, funding for a new bridge will be secured by the time the current one is completely taken down over the next couple of years.

Maybe - but I am not holding my breath on that. Either way it will be 10 to 15 years or longer without this piece of infrastructure.
