SJ Port Days is this week, 17th-18th. Lots of speakers - CCO of CMA CGM, Premier Susan Holt, EVP/CCO CN, VP Sales & Marketing CPKC, CEO of Americold, and COO of DP World, among others.

The opening of Americold will be the big news, but hopefully, there will be some other insights. The Port's AGM is also this month on the 29th.

Location, location, location: Why proposed N.B. potash mine has advantage

https://tj.news/new-brunswick/location-location-location-why-proposed-n-b-potash-mine-has-advantage

Quote:
While Saskatchewan has been a potash powerhouse for years, a proposed New Brunswick mine would have an advantage over that province’s producers because of its ability to ship directly overseas.

Atlantic Potash Millstream Corporation CEO and director Keith Attoe said having a deposit in rural Kings County, near the town of Sussex, located just 70 kilometres from the Port of Saint John is a “huge advantage.”
Erin Weir, a Saskatchewan-based consulting economist with Silo Strategy, agrees.

He said Atlantic Potash won’t have to deal with the same transportation hurdles as its western counterpart, which transports the bulky commodity thousands of kilometres by rail to reach a port.

“The real advantage for New Brunswick potash would be the access to ports and overseas markets,” he said. “Saskatchewan is better positioned to put potash on trains to the American corn belt… Atlantic Potash would probably want to access all the markets that it can, but I think its business model would really be to get the potash quickly to a port and then be able to sell it overseas.”
Quote:
Attoe said proximity could also make for a more competitive price. He said the company estimates $75 per tonne in savings from trucking potash loads to Saint John for export.

I can only wish them well. I hope they are not chasing the current price spike because that will go back down relatively quickly. Although I would love to see a great opportunity like that develop, they are dealing with a global industry. I'm not going to hold my breath.

"Americold Opens Integrated Cold Chain Facility at Port Saint John, One of North America’s Fastest-Growing Trade Gateways
June 18, 2026

Developed in collaboration with DP World and CPKC, the facility integrates maritime and rail access to streamline the global movement of temperature-controlled products
ATLANTA, June 18, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Americold Realty Trust (NYSE: COLD), a global leader in temperature-controlled logistics, real estate and value-added services, today announced the grand opening of its import-export hub at Port Saint John in New Brunswick, Canada during Port Days 2026, the Port’s annual maritime and industry conference.

Developed in collaboration with DP World and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (TSX: CP) (NYSE: CP) (CPKC), the facility is the first of its kind globally to combine Americold’s cold storage operations, DP World’s maritime logistics capabilities, and CPKC’s rail network in a single location. Together, these capabilities create a more direct and reliable pathway for moving perishable goods between inland production regions and international markets.

“This facility leverages our collaboration with leading global trade and transportation partners, creating a uniquely integrated solution to move temperature-sensitive products between inland production regions and international markets more efficiently and reliably,” said Rob Chambers, Chief Executive Officer at Americold. “It is another example of how we are evolving our network to better serve our customers through differentiated solutions that open new growth opportunities for the Company. The launch of this facility further supports our 2026 priorities and positions Americold for sustainable long-term growth and shareholder value creation.”

Located at one of North America’s fastest-growing trade gateways, the facility is designed to support flows between Central and Eastern Canada and Europe, South America, and the Asia-Pacific region. As the only temperature-controlled storage solution in Eastern Canada directly connected to a port without drayage, it removes intermediate transport between vessel and warehouse, helping reduce both cost and transit time.

“The grand opening of this new cold storage facility at Port Saint John marks an important milestone in CPKC’s growing collaboration with Americold,” said Keith Creel, CPKC President and CEO. “By combining this state-of-the-art facility with CPKC’s three-nation rail service, we are creating a new temperature-controlled supply chain that connects Atlantic Canada to key markets across Canada and throughout North America. Working with Americold and JD Irving’s NBM Railways, CPKC has helped deliver a secure, seamless and integrated solution that is truly unique and one our competitors simply cannot replicate.”

The Port Saint John hub provides approximately 22,000 pallet positions and is designed to support high-throughput import and export volumes. Its configuration enables more efficient handling across transportation modes, giving customers greater visibility and control over their supply chains.

“The operational launch of the Americold facility at Port Saint John reflects the progress we are making in aligning terminal operations, inland rail connectivity, and temperature-controlled storage,” said Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada. “By coordinating these capabilities, we enable customers to move perishable goods through the port with greater consistency and efficiency as they connect to global markets.”

The Americold facility builds on continued investment in port and rail infrastructure, positioning Port Saint John as a growing gateway for global containerized shipping.

“Americold is a tremendous addition to Port Saint John and to the broader trade ecosystem taking shape at our gateway,” said Craig Bell Estabrooks, President & CEO of Port Saint John. “Their import-export hub on the waterfront strengthens our role in enabling trade diversification and driving economic prosperity in New Brunswick and beyond.”

“Americold’s investment at Port Saint John is exactly the type of strategic growth project we want to attract to New Brunswick. These are the projects that create jobs, strengthen our infrastructure, and connect our province to global markets,” said Luke Randall, Minister responsible for Opportunities New Brunswick. “This momentum at the port is reinforcing its role as Atlantic Canada’s largest port by volume and improving market access for exporters.”

Americold’s investment in the facility is expected to support up to 100 jobs and contribute to ongoing economic development in New Brunswick.

The Port Saint John hub represents a key step in Americold’s strategy to leverage its infrastructure and strategic partnerships to better connect production to consumption across the global cold chain.

I gather there weren’t any significant announcements made at Port Days this year. Not a word in the local media.

New $100M cold storage facility opens at Port Saint John
https://yoursaintjohn.ca/new-100m-cold-storage-facility-opens-at-port-saint-john/

Quote:
“A one-of-a-kind cold storage facility in Saint John is officially open.

A grand opening ceremony for Americold’s export-import hub was held June 18, where officials from the company and its partners — Port Saint John, DP World and CPKC — joined local and provincial government representatives to cut the ribbon.

During the ceremony, Americold CEO Rob Chambers said the project marks the beginning of a long-term commitment.

“We are just at the beginning of what’s going to be a wonderful journey here in Saint John, and we couldn’t be more excited,” he said.

Americold is a U.S.-based company specializing in temperature-controlled logistics real estate aimed at strengthening global supply chains.

The company announced in early 2025 that it planned to build the facility in the city. The site is expected to enhance food distribution, primarily between central and eastern Canada and Europe, South America and the Asia-Pacific region.

The facility is also expected to benefit not only Saint John but the broader region by helping create supply chain resilience.

“We have workers here who are going to benefit, but it goes beyond that,” Premier Susan Holt said in her remarks. “That’s what really excites me — the opportunity for New Brunswick and for New Brunswick businesses.”

Holt added that businesses in the province now have access to a global network through Port Saint John, allowing local products to reach more markets.

Americold invested $100 million in the facility, which took about 13 months to build.

As part of the project, Opportunities NB provided $1.01 million in payroll rebates to support job creation. The facility is expected to contribute up to $37 million to provincial GDP.

It is also expected to create 100 jobs by 2029. Currently, 35 people are employed at the site.

Chambers said the company expects to hire the remaining staff within a year.

He added that positions yet to be filled include supervisory roles, as well as pallet and forklift operators.

Chambers said Americold is interested in future growth in Saint John, but will first focus on ensuring the current facility is successful before considering expansion.

“It’ll depend in part on how quickly the facility fills up and how sustainable it is long term, but all indications early on are that this building is going to be a success,” he said. “We can’t wait to be here, be a big part of the community long term and keep growing here in Port Saint John.”

Port Saint John is also looking toward further growth.

Port president and CEO Craig Bell Estabrooks said upcoming projects may not be as large as those completed over the past decade, but they are important for improving operations.

He said the port plans to invest federal trade corridor funding to widen and deepen the channel to accommodate more vessels, as well as fully renovate four warehouses.

“They are smaller projects by nature,” Bell Estabrooks said, “but they are really important to keep this momentum going.”

The continuing momentum from the port is really exciting, if we were able to secure even a portion of one of the new military ship contracts (like some major subcontractor work for the submarines) we'd really be flying high. Sadly it looks like that ship has sailed, but hey, a man can dream.

Does anyone not think it is going to happen? I thought it was a given at this stage, unless something changes dramatically in government or politics. Just a question of timing.

I hope it gets approved this year so they can get started next year.

First hard number I've seen on this. Channel widening is a big deal — and it answers some near-term questions. This is an absolutely prime 'next step.' If that's where the money's going, it will boost the port's capability and stature in eastern North America. Also noteworthy: the CMA CGM COO was in town for Port Days. Those folks don't just come for the seafood — they're looking for the 'C' food. I'll be keeping my ear to the ground on that one.

I don’t see any spur lines up to the building, so I assume terminal tractors would move containers to the facility if train to hub is required. Impressive to see the number of truck bays.

Infrastructure pivotal for port's future: CEO

https://tj.news/saint-john-south/infrastructure-pivotal-for-ports-future-ceo

Quote:
That infrastructure maintenance and investment ties in with the province’s request for $285 million from the federal government as part of its $5-billion Trade Diversification Corridors Fund, which Ottawa has said must be spent on port, rail, and digital infrastructure. The request is a partner application involving the port and J.D. Irving Ltd. with roughly $170 million tied directly to the Port of Saint John. While a large portion of those funds are connected to the reconfiguration of Simms Corner, there’s more to it, said Bell Estabrooks.

“We want to be able to handle even larger vessels and we want to dredge the harbour so it can be wider and deeper so we can allow for two-way traffic for smaller vessels and just really increase that operational window,” he said. “We are a tidal port, there’s no question. Those eight metre plus tides twice a day impact our ability to bring in vessels so the more investments that we can make that make it easier for whether it’s a cruise ship, a container ship or a liquid or dry bulk vessel we want to make it easy for folks to come in.”

However, infrastructure doesn’t mean residents should expect to see additional cranes added to the port in the immediate future. In early 2023 two Super Post-Panamax cranes arrived from South Carolina and again, in late 2024, two of the largest cranes to be deployed at Port Saint John arrived and were operational in early 2025.

Currently, Bell Estabrooks said, the port believes it has enough cranes considering the volume it handles daily.

“The old berth, those are 50 gauge cranes and the strength of that terminal, you can’t add more crane capacity over there. We’ve got four at the new berth and that is all we need to handle the vessels there and you can’t really add anymore because the old berth is what it is,” he said.
