Where does Google Maps place your city center?

If I do that for Kanas City, MO, the center isn't even in the city, it's over a railyard on the Kanas side.

I get the intersection of E. 12th and Oak Streets:

I think some people are doing a Google Map search of their city and then just literally zooming in, rather than zooming in on where the city name is on the map.
