In any case, hats off to Calgary, and YYC and Westjet!! Yee-haw !!!

oh, and I forgot to mention Abu Dhabi on ETIHAD. Way to go !!!
Fair points

(WS) WestJet currently has only (7) Boeing 787-9 all already used pretty on YYC - Europe & Asia + seasonal to Mexico/ Hawaii US & plus (new) this winter to 3x weekly São Paulo Brazil✅.

WS has (9) more 787 planes ✈️on order with deliveries in a few years time -which they probably be based at Calgary YYC & with some room to add a bit from Toronto YYZ/ Vancouver YVR too .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WestJet

As for South America flights from YVR - it will likely be on (AC) Air Canada once they get deliveries of the new Boeing 787-10.

25OCT26 – 01DEC26 5 weekly A330-300 / 2 weekly A330-200
eff 02DEC26 1 daily A330-300

All non-WS Europe flights will be on A330s with AC’s daily LHR 333 continuing and Discover’s 6 weekly FRA flights also on A330
Yep & the only foreign Airline to Calgary YYC operating something other than A330 ,is Etihad Airways using Boeing 787-9 4x weekly & it’s also one of the earliest morning internationals arriving flights by a (foreign Airline) to land at Calgary scheduled to be around 6am/ 7am.

The (very early) morning international arrivals at YYC is currently from Hawaii US & Mexico City on WestJet✅.

Alaska has tentatively planned mainline 737 service from November 1:

AS1572 SEA 17:57 - 20:27 YYC 73J D
AS1573 YYC 08:10 - 09:00 SEA 73J D

Other winter changes:

WS has increased FLL to 6x weekly, MCO to 9x weekly and reduced GDL to 1x weekly. WS & EY will be the only long-haul 787s so far, with AC, KL and 4Y all running 330s.

Nearly 12 hours is a long time to RON at an outstation, is this due to crew scheduling (ie. same crew operates the return the next morning) ?

Wonder if the other Alaska/Horizon flight(s) will also up-gauge to a 737, seems unnecessarily complicated to send a mix of AS/QX jets and crews to Calgary.

Wonder if they will tow them over to the Lufthansa Technik (or another facility for an engine swap that will send engines to Technik and return others for mounting) and swap tails.

So it is more about maintenance than anything else.

Lufthansa Technik is currently a hole in the ground with no work done on it in what seems like months. Still years away

More WS updates. HNL now increased to 4x weekly, and YQB extended into mid-November.

Its the only daily flight during that period. A single daily 737 flight. So its probably scheduled like that for crew rest.

2029/2030 Is currently the plan based on insurance and finance details in what we can see. AeroNex will be open before that and are likley going to have an expansion announced before the first phase is open.

They are also going to tender to do renovations of the entire domestic terminal starting next year which will take several years.

I assume we mean concourses A and C, since B is already being renovated? B was the worst, what do we need to do with A and C, beyond removing the dungeons in A?

Sorry, should have been clearer. Primary work for next phase will be A & C, once B is complete for a consistent look, finish and technology. There are plans to redo the security areas to retail space that were in A & C as well and how its all connected but I think that just means ripping out where those golf carts were.

They have 5-6 years of consistent work planned for domestic.

Looks like the new seasonal Winter Calgary YYC - São Paulo GRU Brazil - YYC will be will be Mid December 2026 to Mid February 2027 .
Yes last departure Calgary YYC - São Paulo GRU Brazil is February 14th & with the return on February 15th GRU - YYC .

Not too surprising as Mid February - WestJet needs the 787 plane ✈️ used on 3x weekly YYC - GRU - YYC (to do some Mexico flights from YYC) as from mid February onwards to end of March it is the start of Spring Break time + 1 week reading break for University / College students in Canada = demand for Mexico ✅.

9 weeks is criminally short for such an obscure route.

WS would have been better off to run seasonal YVR-SYD service over that period. Australia to Canada demand is absolutely bonkers over Xmas / Aussie summer break.

Certainly won’t be the first time or last time this has happened

That’s a pretty quick change considering only announced a few months ago. Clearly shows not the winner they were hoping for. Time will tell of course

SEA is out of RON space for both AS/QX and DL. They have to take some RON aircraft and fly them to closeby places in order to have feed for their mid-morning departure bank.

The spike in fuel costs likely heavily contributed to this. It was their longest route so was the most exposed to it. If bookings were terrible, they probably would have outright cancelled it similar to what happened with MDE.

Many airlines have cancelled/reduced new routes for the very same reasons.

The next question is what happens to this freed up 787 space now? Do they extend ICN or FCO out to the end of November, then resume either in late Feb/early March? More Mexico turns? I can't see it just sitting around.

Though Mexico already had 787 capacity scheduled, and didn't need the freed up frame to work.

Surely either ICN or FCO go year round. They seem like safe bets no? At least ICN

Someone posted on Reddit that Calgary YYC Airport Customs had “very long lines” 1 day ago- yes it’s Summer 2026 travel ✈️ season + not too surprising✅.

Welcome To Canada to all of them & Cheers from Edmonton YEG….. hope they Enjoy World Cup Of Soccer ⚽️ tournament over the next few weeks/ the Calgary Stampede in July & various Festivals in this country & have a great time in Alberta too.

Is this just a bunch of widebodies coming in at once during summer, or an issue?
I am doing transborder every 2-3 weeks and have been for years in Calgary, plus 2 trips to the UK for work. I have never waited more than 10 minutes to clear.

There was an internet outage and it required CBSA to screen the old school way.
