A selection of photos the past couple weeks.

A beach near UVic, one of many little coves and beaches in a forested area next to UVic, although not the main beach most people know about which is the large/sandy Cadboro Bay Beach.

Now this is not Finnerty Beach, I don't even know the name of this one, but it's right beside it, the next cove over. When you come out of the trail you come out onto a rocky grassy outcrop, which is one of the dominate features of Victoria. Beaches and dry rocky outcrops with Arbutus or Gary oak trees, shrubs and dry grass type fauna. Not the greatest picture as it was taken into the sun, but oh well.

Ok, now the optical illusion part, step ten feet forward and the rocky outcrop pops out of no where. And they look like small boulders you could walk across, but while not massive cliffs, it is fairly large although the camera makes it look insignificant. Keep in mind the lens I uses is one that closely matches what is a natural human perspective/vision - not wide lens or zoom.

But then I swear I say a couple of mermaids on a hidden beach, I took a picture to see if it would be captured on the camera card, and alas it did. Now the crazy part is that I only walked another 20-30 feet or so from the rocky outcrop picture to the next one which opened up this hidden beach. Can you find the beach opening in the photo above? It's not where you think, but the very first small little break down from the large beach. It looks impossibly small in one picture, as if you could just step across it. Again no change in zoom or anything, says Zoomer. If it wasn't for the photo proof I'd swear I was tripping.

I did head out to the suburbs one day.Royal Bay in Colwood, being built on a former century old quarry/gravel pit next to the ocean which you can see in the background and adjacent to the ocean facing Beachlands development. Together they'll provide about 6,250 homes when completed.

I'm realizing from photo "tour" of the city that just because an area is interesting or vibrant doesn't mean they're necessarily great for photos. But these two areas I did on the weekend stand out for me. The Islands are a true treasure and amazing to have minutes from downtown. And I quite like walking around Old Town Toronto, very pleasant. St. James Park (next to the cathedral) might be my favourite downtown park.

Not sure where I'm headed next - might go to Riverdale.

Good points, sometimes photos don't do a great job of capturing je ne sais quoi of a neighbourhood. When that happens I think by moving in closer, or focusing on the finer details instead of getting a wider perspective tends to help. And capturing the people/bikes/vehicles/general movement, flow or motion as well.

I'm sorry. I don't understand Rimouski. Respectfully, that is an extremely unflattering picture. I don't see even one remotely flattering structure and then to add insult to injury, surface parking lots. I feel that geographically it has potential, but I think it really needs a couple of attractive new mid rises.

The pic shows the worst aspects of many smaller Canadian cities and towns; the commercial areas are the worst, especially in places that are not architecturally historic, but also not very modern, usually economically depressed or stagnant places. In this case, even the "exotic" Quebecois culture does not save it. It's just a few non-descript random buildings that could be anywhere in an anonymous industrial park, literally awash in a sea of parking lots. Unfortunately this is the alienating environment many Canadians have been conditioned to live in and come to accept as "normal". If Canadians are still leaving small towns behind, this is both part of the cause and the result.

I agree with the sentiments, but I hope I'm not the only one that looks at a picture of a smaller city - with the aforementioned issues - but instead sees a template for improvement?

I think that's what I enjoy about places like Rimouski and similarly-sized municipalities around the country - future cities that can grow, diversify, mature, and get some unique cityscaping going that will provide new and emerging places for Canadians to live.

It's the same as how I saw places like Edmonton and Saskatoon growing up - yes, they have their infrastructure and city planning issues, but they've come so far since the early 90's when I started loving this stuff as a kid (who really loved Sim City).

Parking lots? Yes. Old buildings? Of course. But it's hard not to envision what the potential can be.

Yep!

The main idea of this picture is to visualize the upcoming Phare project in its context, which will be located on the parking lot in the front center.

Rimouski has so much potential. Reconnecting the city to its shoreline is key so that road by the river needs to be taken out entirely and its through traffic re-diverted inland. Complete 30+ quality buildings and then urbanize those streets (less car lanes, wider sidewalks). It would take vision, political will, and about 15-20 years but these things are very doable.

Je sais.

In my opinion, Rimouski’s mean attraction are the seaside views, especially at sundown. They have made a fantastic boardwalk along the shoreline.

A shame. Is the shoreline sand, rock, or a mixture of the 2? I've been to Rivière-du-Loup many times when traveling between the Maritimes and Quebec but that's as close as I've been to Rimouski.
