I was at the game. I've had season tickets on the North Side for years.
The South Side seats were virtually empty for the entire game. From my vantage point, I could see the concourse behind the lower level was packed. As the game progressed, it was evident that people were moving over the North Side to find spots under the roof.
In that Citizen Article, Goudie is quoted as saying that the number of rainy games over the past 3-4 seasons is "Statistically improbable", but here we are. Anecdotally, it seems like there are no fewer than 3 rainy game per season.
Romaticize all you want about the tough, dedicated, football fan, but it's clearly no fun to sit in the rain, especially to watch what has been a rather lacklustre team on the field these past number of years. This last game should really send a message to OSEG that having a roof over the stands improves the game experience for fans and creates one less reason for fans not to go if there is indecision about going to a game or not.
I can confidently say that in my 10+ years of watching games from the North Side, I have never once said "I wish we didn't have this roof". That fan that was quoted in the Citizen piece probably represents a lot of people who have been going to games for years.
Finally, in reference to Goudie's other quote in the Citizen piece, that most open-air stadiums do not have roofs over the seating areas, it's probably worth noting that 3 of the 7 other open-air stadiums in the CFL do have substantial portions of the seating covered by a roof.
