This was made back when the state tourist bureau was trying to make the Salton Sea a tourist destination. (I patched them together the best I could)

I just spent some time researching Erik Estrada, re: Battle of the Network Stars.

According to Wikipedia, IMDB, ChatGPT, et al, Estrada did not take part in any episode of the original Battle of the Network Stars. His first appearance on the show was the rebooted version that came out in 2017.

Any version of the photo that claims the person pictured is Estrada all originate in Reddit or Facebook posts, which are hardly definitive.

On the other hand, Patrick Wayne did take part in the Battle of the Network Stars episode of Nov. 2, 1979. You can see him in the episode on YouTube, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KyxkNsIo-s&t=538s

And here is a photograph of Wayne on Battle of the Network Stars:

Based upon all of the above, I'm tentatively sticking with my earlier conclusion that the photo shows Patrick Wayne, not Estrada.
___

One last thing regarding the following photo:

While everyone in the above photo did appear on Battle of the Network Stars at some point, there was no single episode that featured all of them together. For example:
  • Gary Burghoff appeared only on episode 1.
  • Joyce DeWitt only appeared on episodes 5 and 7.
  • Dan Haggerty only appeared on episode 3 (etc, etc).
Therefore, it seems likely that the above photo does not come from an episode of Battle of the Network Stars at all. As to where it actually comes from, I have no idea.
In my opinion - Patrick Wayne?....no way! The guy kinda resembles Erik Estrada, but then again, only resembles. Bit of a mystery.

Further up the 700 block, I found both Dazian's Inc Drapery and B B Nichols Inc Photo Supplies listed at 731 S Hope Street in different CDs.

Here's the 800 block of S Hope Street in 1983. From the description:
Opened on July 8th, 1923, this church at 813 S. Hope included a four-story Sunday school building and an auditorium that sat 3,000 visitors. Despite the efforts to protect the structure, it was demolished in 1983.
The site then remained as a parking lot until the 22-story 8th and Hope building was completed in 2014.

And the winner of this "who is that celebrity battle" is ......... Erik Estrada!

The picture is from the lesser known international celebrity sport series US Against The World.

It ran for two editions in 1977 and 1978. The second edition is not listed on IMDB but Erik did take part in that second show.

He can be seen here with Dan Haggerty during the event. Scott Baio sports his US Against The World shirt with badge.

Wallace China Company photos found online in an Etsy dead linked file to an unavailable item. There are four shots in the set…dating and copyright claims are unknown to me so please be careful about useage beyond an academic look.

The whole set:

Notice the beehive kilns in the fourth photo taken outdoors. Wallace China is especially “noirish” in that it turns up in scenes from movies of that genre right into the 1970’s remake era. If anyone can find aerials of the Wallace plant on Soto please post them. Shenango got control and closed the facilities during the early 1960’s, ending a history that went all the way back to Poxon’s arrival in SoCal to help build a tile factory for a member of the British Wade family which he was related to. A specialist in glaze chemistry, Mr. Poxon is thought to have been linked to the original Catalina Island pottery as well as Poxon China, the Furlong-Poxon plant (which became Vernon Kilns), and Wallace China’s early years. (His influence in California wares cannot be easily captured.)

Search reference for Wallace China Company in Huntington Park as of 1956:

Source: unknown image in my files, possibly LarryRPaul’s Hotel database via an email or NLA 1 postings?

Love that photograph of Robert Mitchum, Alkapone. (and the Wallace coffee up )

Farewell, My Lovely is chock-full of Los Angeles locations.

I'd love to see some screengrabs from the movie. I'll try and dig some up.

E.R. thanks…and you’ll be pleased to know, if you don’t already, that Earl Carroll even had their own specially designed pattern from Wallace China.

No, I didn't know that. That's really cool.

This is 5500 S Soto Street in 1971, seven years after the factory closed, but it's virtually identical to the aerials back to 1948. I'm not sure that it matches the images above which appear to include a circular structure.

Hidden Wonders (a new series)

While I was snooping in the area surrounding the Vista Theater this apt. building with a turret - caught my eye.

GSV

Imagine my surprise when I realized it has two turrets!

Along the left edge you can make out the V on the rooftop sign at the Vista.

The 2nd turret is pretty much hidden away in the back.

It's located on the 1500 block of Rosalia Road....You can check it out for yourself HERE

It seems to be split into two properties, 1527 and 1529. It was built in 1939 in a style that the Los Feliz Improvement Association call French Normandy.

I thought that the census data was interesting ($45/month rent) until I realized that it was from nine years before the house was built!

ABC

First on the left is Linda Evans with her trademark sweatband as seen on the Crystal Light TV commercials. It was the sweatband era. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002067/
Ann Jillian is in the center. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0422713/bio/
Last on the right I am less sure about but I'll say is Jenilee Harrison. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0365649/
