Paseo doesn't count as downtown? Also, didn't 5RR already have a groundbreaking a while back?

The Paseo started in late November/December 2022 despite the official groundbreaking being in February 2023. That's similar to Waterline starting in April 2022 with the official groundbreaking being in September 2022. "Official" groundbreakings don't necessarily reflect the actual start dates. If 5RR had a "groundbreaking" this year, it had nothing to do with the project actually starting.

Ahhh, gotcha. So I was confusing the event that is called groundbreaking with the process of actually breaking ground.

So nothing else has had work started at all this year?

Smash ATX is not too active on social media but doesn't have any mention of closing. There is a scrolling banner on their website saying they are still open. But their table reservation system is not accepting reservations beyond 09/15.

Smash ATX is open still. System doesn’t allow any reservations beyond 12/15 now, which coincides with their new construction start of 1Q 2024.

Eater Austin article about the closing:
https://austin.eater.com/2024/2/20/24078...downtown-austin-ping-pong-bar-restaurant

The article gives no indication that they are looking to move to a new location.

As a continuation of our urban development strategy, Peachtree Group will soon begin construction on a shovel-ready 480-key dual-branded Embassy Suites and Tempo by Hilton in downtown Austin, Texas, one of the fastest-growing urban markets in the United States. The project is uniquely positioned as the only non-luxury hotel expected to deliver in the downtown market over the next ~5 years, creating a favorable competitive environment.

Hotel demand is expected to increase materially as the Austin Convention Center doubles is redeveloping and doubling in size, reopening to coincide with the hotel’s delivery. In addition, the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is undergoing a major expansion, further supporting growth in both business and leisure travel. Together, these drivers are expected to create a favorable supply-demand dynamic as lodging demand is projected to increase 20–30% over the coming years.

The project occupies one of the premier sites in downtown Austin, featuring the city’s highest rooftop bar with panoramic views of downtown, the state capital, and Lady Bird Lake.

That's hopeful. But this project has been "coming soon" for several years.

TDLR filing was also updated:

I think now that their other hotel projects are wrapping up, they can finally devote all their attention to this one.

Now listed as under construction:

I pass by the site pretty often and can say there’s nothing going on yet.

A ROW closure permit for construction was filed today. The start date is listed as Monday 06/08, although that's a little soon since the permit was just filed. ROW closures for this project have been filed before, so hopefully it's for real this time.
