. . .but where on Pico?
The seller gives the location in the description:
The photo appears to have been taken from a rooftop just behind 4500 W. Pico (the vacuum store at center, right, Boulevard Vacuum, still in business today on the 5000 block of Pico). I believe the white dot on the mountain (center, left) is Griffith Park Observatory.
I think it's actually taken from a parking lot rather than a roof. Established in 1946, the Boulevard Vacuum & Sewing Co is now at 5086 W Pico Boulevard. This is about as close as I could get. We're looking up West Boulevard.

I happened upon a 1940s colorized video titled Road Trip to Los Angeles (it starts outside a U.S.O.)

You can watch it HERE

Frustratingly, I'm completely baffled in my attempts to find any listings for anything in the picture; but I seem to see Atlantic Ave. on one of the street signs, and I believe the nearly legible address on one of the buildings is a four digit number. The placement of the oil derricks is suggestive; and so I'll stretch my neck out and guess that we're looking at the east side of Atlantic Avenue somewhere around the 2800 or 2900 blocks. This area has been completely redeveloped owing to the construction of Memorial Hospital in 1960, with its attendant medical offices and so on, and so there's nothing presently there to give us any hints, unless we pay attention to the soil level vis-a-vis the street level as it is at present. Perhaps someone can supply an aerial of the area for the era of the photographs . . . ?

It's the NE corner of Atlantic Avenue and E 23rd Street in Long Beach.

GSV

The frock shop was at 2310 Atlantic and Holmes & Carter occupied 615 E. 23rd (now part of 2300 Atlantic).

We're at the end of the 5 streetcar line on N Eagle Rock Boulevard at the intersection with Merton Avenue. In the background on the left above is the now demolished Sierra Theater.

Funny you say that, my first thought was “jeez, I recognize all of them!”

Having said that...

Back Row:
• Dick Van Patten
• At first glance, I thought it was Erik Estrada, but I believe this is Patrick Wayne (son of John Wayne)
• Jimmy Walker
• Dan Haggerty

Middle Row:
• Valerie Bertinelli
• Melissa Sue Anderson
• Scott Baio
• Kristy McNichol

Front Row:
• Gary Burghoff
• Joyce DeWitt
??????
• Dick Clark

Someone correct me if I'm wrong!

Thanks, Odinthor! Sorry, I somehow didn't see your response to my 3/23 post (#534 about trying to locate the beach arch seen for brief moments in DOUBLE INDEMNITY when Fred MacMurray drives by with Barbara Stanwyk's daughter in the car) until now. I honestly don't know. I would think Billy Wilder's film crew would have stuck as close as possible to LA for convenience sake though it's surely rear projection so it's certainly possible. I'm just not that skilled or knowledgeable about topography from old shoreline LA and particularly not Balboa/Newport Beach from the early 1940s. Do you have any old photos of the Balboa/Newport area you mean? Thanks!

Cloris Leachman, of course! How could I miss that one?
___

I just spent some time researching Erik Estrada, re: Battle of the Network Stars.

According to Wikipedia, IMDB, ChatGPT, et al, Estrada did not take part in any episode of the original Battle of the Network Stars. His first appearance on the show was the rebooted version that came out in 2017.

Any version of the photo that claims the person pictured is Estrada all originate in Reddit or Facebook posts, which are hardly definitive.

On the other hand, Patrick Wayne did take part in the Battle of the Network Stars episode of Nov. 2, 1979. You can see him in the episode on YouTube, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KyxkNsIo-s&t=538s

And here is a photograph of Wayne on Battle of the Network Stars:

Based upon all of the above, I'm tentatively sticking with my earlier conclusion that the photo shows Patrick Wayne, not Estrada.
___

One last thing regarding the following photo:

While everyone in the above photo did appear on Battle of the Network Stars at some point, there was no single episode that featured all of them together. For example:
  • Gary Burghoff appeared only on episode 1.
  • Joyce DeWitt only appeared on episodes 5 and 7.
  • Dan Haggerty only appeared on episode 3 (etc, etc).
Therefore, it seems likely that the above photo does not come from an episode of Battle of the Network Stars at all. As to where it actually comes from, I have no idea.

And I am sure it's Melissa Gilbert (the other Melissa) between Valerie and Scott.

It looks like it was freshly finished. I wonder if this is a photograph of 'opening day'.

I failed.

I was trying to figure out what logo is on their t-shirts.

The photo could have been from any number of Hollywood charity events.
