I believe the colours come from the LED lights inside the sign, so they nearly invisible during the day. I might be wrong though.

CTV News had the following picture on-line this morning:

Two things struck me about it:

1) Has the sign really faded so much? And why hasn’t the City kept it looking vibrant? (OK, I know the answer to the second part – The City DOESN’T DO ANY UPKEEP OF ITS ASSETS, and letting the colours fade perhaps shows a truer representation of how non-vibrant the City regards the By-Ward Market.)

2) And, Is the sign really not accessible? Since it appears to up on a raised platform, those in wheelchairs are less able to interact with the sign. (Although maybe it requires that curb for Snowplow-Protection – since it appears that having someone HAND SHOVEL around monuments and on stairs is beyond the City’s ability.)

Then, of course, there is the old, much discussed, question of whether the City even thought about what would be pictured in the background of every photo taken there. (The answer to that question is, of course, NO.) Maybe, since the City is doing work on the Mackensie-King Bridge, the prop can be moved to the north sidewalk – overlooking the Rideau Canal, with a view of Parliament Hill.

Oh, and once the City has done its work rehabilitating the bridge, could we get a fresh coat of paint on those railings, please. (Because I doubt that the state of the railings would have even been looked at when they were having the consultants assess the bridge condition – being out of scope, and all that.)
1) This sign never had colour. It's white with LEDs that change colour. Probably just needs a good wash.
2) Sign needed a solid base and they probably wanted to elevated slightly for various reasons. I guess someone in a wheel chair could (if we had ramps) go between the Ts, but I don't think it's a huge deal it's not "accessible". If the elevated plinth was much wider, than I could see an issue.

The idea of the location was for a view of Parliament in the background and heritage buildings around. CTV's low angle isn't ideal. Here's a better shot (low quality, but better angle).

That said, putting this on the Mackenzie-King Bridge to get the Canal, Union Station, Chateau Laurier, Convention Centre, NAC and of course Parliament is a good one. We just couldn't get AWATTO anymore. It could also be hard to get far enough from the sign to get a good shot overall.

I was down there on the weekend. I actually noted that the sign looked good and always seemed to have people around it. I think the picture may exaggerate the paleness of the colours.

I think the location is fine - just need to make that parking into a pedestrian square.

For both those reasons, but especially the AWATTO problem, I'd be loathe to put it anywhere that takes away the photographer's creative control.

Redblacks have started selling these hats. It both works and doesn't work at the same time, and I get the AWATTO reference, but why is it upside down?

Albert Street is dangerously narrow on the south side. Other than where a few buildings have colonnades at street level, you can barely walk two people shoulder to shoulder. The corner of the intersection of Kent and Albert (south-east) is tiny.

The rebuild can't come soon enough and Ford's stud[id anti bike legislation is making this harder.

What's taking so long with the bridge? It's been torn up for years now.

Complete replacement would have been quicker

I imagine keeping it open the entire time delayed the project significantly.
