I'll offer a somewhat different perspective: Because such a significant part of the economy in this part of the nation has morphed into an export-dependent entity over the past 30 years, the current situation was inevitable if the international situation changed for the worse, and it would be a small victory if the unemployment rate doesn't ultimately exceed 10 or 15 percent if the trade situation remains as it currently is. That's small comfort for those caught up in the situation, but nonetheless.
Another small comfort is that this can be a learning experience: don't rely on other nations to remain reliable friends forever. Things always change. Be self reliant in critical matters.
