Public officials gathered for the official opening of Burnaby’s new $27.8-million pedestrian-cyclist bridge over Highway 1 Saturday, but that didn’t stop the flow of pedestrians and cyclists already using the span.

Throughout the ceremony, which featured a ribbon cutting and speeches by municipal, provincial and federal politicians, as well as TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn, people continued to roll and walk past on their way over the bridge.

The city unofficially opened the overpass earlier this month after people started sneaking past the few remaining barriers keeping it closed to the public.

“The excitement this project has created is incredible,” Mayor Mike Hurley said to a small crowd gathered on the south end of the bridge for the official opening.

I also had to check out the new Burnaby Lake Overpass and it is pretty cool and a very easy connection over Highway 1.







The bridge makes it easy to cross one of the busiest sections of Highway 1.





I don't personally mind the rusty brown color of the bridge, but was hoping for some LED lighting which isn't there.

I think there is lighting on it somewhere. Maybe I am misremembering, since it opened I have only been under it at night once.

I can see the bridge from Metrotown but never noticed any lighting on it. On DailyHive they also only talked about lighting in the railing, so that's a positive surprise.

I drove under it sunday evening after 9 pm and can confirm there is lighting on it, a long line of light along where the handrail is.

If you look closely at the last picture, you can probably see the lighting strip.

The lack of lighting on the4 arch is probably a good thing.
I always get distracted by the colour changing bridge on Hwy 99.

I live near this area, and these bike upgrades are fine if not entirely necessary.

What is apparent though is that the City has abandoned their previous "Streetcar Right of Way" in this area. Which calls into question why they are bothering with the rest of the ROW? Just develop it and/or continue with transportation related improvements.

How have they abandoned it? A redesign/rebuild would be required in the streetcar scenario anyways (which isn't going to happen any time soon).

I also would like the city to more aggressively pursue the streetcar, but I don't think it should be an impediment to cycling infrastructure that makes the city more accessible now.

Sure in the sense that "nothing is permanent" they can rip up streetlights and completely reconstruct the street, but the "ROW" is hardly worth the paper it's written on.

Big parts of the rest of the ROW are useless. If they are giving up to this extent those should be rebuild in a more useful fashion, as I said above.

I gotta tell you folks, the bridge is amazing! Once I rode the route that I took in the video it makes perfect sense why it’s there. And with time its use will only increase. Once old Saputo plant gets redeveloped and new recreational centre gets build will generate a lot more uses in the future. This project exceeded my expectations. It’s A+!!!

Connection is great, right right where I finished, by a fire hole number one - there is a pathway straight to Deer Lake Park

Most cars left downtown Vancouver’s Granville Mall decades ago. During the weeks that Vancouver hosts the World Cup, the buses and other vehicles have departed, too — and the city is looking at whether to make the pedestrian-only zone permanent.

Some business owners say it’s made the Granville strip safer, busier and more vibrant. Others say it’s choked off deliveries and made it harder for customers with mobility issues to get around, warning that the goodwill could vanish once Cup tourists go home. Pedestrians are split too — some love the atmosphere, others doubt it has fixed much.
