the old north shore rail line brt plan languishes —

Major $1.3B Staten Island transit project pitched 14 years ago still ‘under review’

Published: Apr. 28, 2026
By Jessica Jones-Gorman | [email protected]

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Plans for Staten Island’s North Shore Bus Rapid Transit system — a long-awaited option first pitched by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in 2012 — have not advanced since a final environmental impact statement was issued in 2024. And despite a recent push from local groups for the project’s inclusion in the MTA’s capital plan, an agency representative says the BRT is still “under review.”

42nd street is bus only on world cup match days --

hopefully they make it permanent and run a tram across it someday --

Manhattan's 42nd Street to be bus-only on World Cup match days

The city will convert 42nd Street into a bus-only corridor and block traffic on streets around Penn Station during World Cup match days to prevent congestion, the Mamdani administration announced Friday.

City officials detailed their plan to handle the influx of an estimated 1.2 million visitors into the New York and New Jersey area, urging locals to avoid driving through Midtown on eight match days at MetLife Stadium in June and July.

"Whether you’re heading to the stadium for a match, the park for a pick-up game or the office like any other day, our streets will work for everyone," Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in a statement.

i had no idea the seating in the whitehall ferry terminal was an art installation.

shows how observant i am — my spouse figured it out —

Whitehall Crossing
Whitehall Ferry Terminal
Granite
2005
New York, NY
Commissioned by the New York City Department of Transportation

Whitehall Crossing is a series of twenty-eight granite benches divided into three serpentine rows in the waiting lobby of the Manhattan side of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Inspired by the flow of people moving through the terminal, the installation reflects the shape and function of the dugout canoes used by Native Americans in the early crossings. The rounded benches and the travelers resting on them, ‘float’ over a water-themed terrazzo floor. As a functional art piece, Whitehall Crossing is often invisible to the ferry goer who, through sitting on the sculpture, engages with and thus become a part of the artwork.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City has moved its plans for the Interborough Express (IBX) forward, announcing the next steps for the substantial project. The authority will bid for stakeholder feedback from the Brooklyn and Queens communities to inform the project’s next stage through public workshops. The authority anticipates releasing a draft corridor design in late 2026.

MTA and NJT should do NOTHING extra to help FIFA run the World Cup.

FIFA don't pay for transport, FIFA don't get no transport.
