Counted 30+ people guarding 2km-long fence between Bayview and Commissioner's Street in the middle of the day. And hundreds of people walking along it like cattle. What's the point?

All crowds are downtown. There were no crowds West of Lebreton. Maybe slightly more than on an average weekday evening. If anything, it only created crowds by funnelling everyone through narrow path instead of letting people spread out.

On the bright side, it's good to see them setting up fireworks on Lemieux Island this year, without closing the river MUP for a week.

We really need to rethink where we launch eh fireworks if it means shutting down CWC bridge every time (if that is the reason).

I honestly don't see how it could affect it. They were setting them up in the dog park behind the fence. Why can't they close it at 8 like they close Alexandria bridge during Lac Leamy shows, I have no idea. Has to be closed for the entire day for some reason. Sounds awfully lot like those years when they were closing Booth bridge to pedestrians for the entire day "for public safety".

I have already crossed CWC a bunch of times since the seasonal closure, most of which have been since New Years.

I have crossed it after a good fresh dumping of snow, and when it's been slushy or icy or both, and when it's been almost entirely ice and snow free (as it was before the last batch.) Been out there in the day, and in the dark (but during normal human hours) and late at night.

Crossed it on a rare sunny day, and a bunch of cloudy ones, and when it's been snowing, and when it's been snaining. I've deeked across in calm weather and in nasty winds. Even "nice" days in winter, the wind can be something else out there - maybe more than any other bridge, actually.

But one thing I haven't done... is cross it alone. There is ALWAYS other human traffic.

So it's not fenced? Did they do like the NCC at Major's/Kiweki and just put a "warning, not winter maintained" sign?

It's most definitely fenced, the fence gate just happens to leave its position often. There's many pictures of such occurrences in this thread

The Gatineau side gate seems to have unalived itself down the embankment.

Looks like a copper thief had a go at the power supply for the bridge lighting system.

We need to crack down on copper thieves. Arguably a bigger problem than car thefts.

Bummer, no lights since last week. Are you sure it's not the city?

The conduit was ripped apart and the wiring cut on the Ottawa end.

Also, I actually kind of liked the dark.

The wooden fence on the Hull-side embankment has also been vandalized in the last week or so.

The copper thief keeps picking at the wiring. Almost every time I've crossed since it started, there are freshly-smashed pieces of conduit on the bridge or the ice.

If they keep going back, the cops should be able to catch them pretty easily if they did their job.

There is some serious under-tapped potential with the bridge and Lemieux Island.

Too much fun - Ottawa doesn't do that.

I was over the bridge earlier this week and there was an electrician on site. Not sure if they were just capping off the loose ends or preparing to restore the conduit and lighting.

If they are redoing all the wiring, I hope they use aluminum wiring this time.

What's stopping them from connecting the bridge to the dog park?
