I hope so too. There’s no reason to have a four lane divided road heading into the forks. Probably expensive to get rid of it though.

The Forks is an extremely popular place for both citizens and especially tourists that come to our city. You want to make it harder for them to get in and out and park?

I wouldn't exactly say that the roads are out of scale honestly, so agreed there. Providing a decent level of parking is also just good business policy. That doesn't mean it has to look like hot garbage, but the reality of Winnipeg is that most people want to drive, and there isn't really good enough (or attractive enough) transit for people to ride. True rapid transit just will never exist at this point because we don't have the stones to actually do it, so having a way to get cars in and out of the Forks will always be a going concern, unless something significant changes.

It could be a pretty solid business decision for any of the vacant lots on main street around there to add parking structures as part of development, I feel like they could do pretty well. The little lot behind Inn at the Forks could also be a good location for another on-site structure...

If parking ever becomes an issue at the Forks after the tragic loss of this gravel lot , there is always the option adding levels on to the existing parking garage, or building a similar sized structure on the lot south of the City TV building.

I don't see lack of parking becoming an issue though...and even if it does, then it's a good sign of the increasing popularity of the Forks.

Fair enough about the sign of increasing popularity. But what we are talking about here overall is in fact the deletion of a bunch of parking that is close by for people, plus the addition of 300 or so new residents who will undoubtedly have more than 0 vehicular needs as well. I'm not saying this is apocalyptic by any stretch, but I do think it would be wise for the Forks to have some sort of long term plan to accomodate people.

Quick observation - sort of agree about the lot south of City TV, but I feel that particular piece of land could have a better use long term as another development site (perhaps with integrated parking).

Also, is it a fact that the existing parkade is engineered to be added on top of?

There's usually cars parked in the curb lanes anyways, so it's basically a single lane road. I never have a problem getting in or out of the Forks. Except for Canada Day and I go there all the time. It would be a neat strip, the linear park, with some of the CRU's and such.

I know eh? Imagine coming into The Forks with an entrance like that. It would be distinctly iconic. I really hope it comes to fruition.

Parking crunch expected at The Forks as major summer events approach

Visitors to The Forks in Winnipeg are facing a tighter-than-usual search for parking this summer — and it’s only going to get more competitive as Pride and Canada Day draw large crowds to the site.

The reason: roughly 350 parking stalls across from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights are now gone, fenced off to make way for the Railside at the Forks mixed-use development currently under construction.

Elisha Pommainville, who managed to find a spot Monday, said the situation already requires patience — and sometimes a little creativity.

“I was lucky to find a parking spot today, but sometimes you kind of have to make your own parking and hope you don’t get caught. Or you’re waiting at least, like, ten, 15, 20 minutes for someone to come out so you can get a spot,” she said.

Others at the site were less optimistic heading into winter months.

“Normally we get really crappy weather. So, a lot of people are not going to be walking in -50 to the forks, so hopefully they’ll be able to make some room somewhere. But I doubt it,” one visitor said.

According to figures from The Forks, the site had 1,500 parking stalls available in 2023. On 92 per cent of the time, no more than 700 of those stalls were occupied. During periods of higher use, roughly 875 spots were typically filled — though demand occasionally surpassed that.

Tineke Buiskool-Leeuwma with The Forks said the overall supply remains sufficient on most days. But she acknowledged that certain events push the system to its limits.

“So, on those busier days, like on Indigenous Peoples Day and Canada Day that are both coming up, we know that parking is at a premium there. But overall, typically, you can find spots here at the Forks,” Buiskool-Leeuwma said.

The Forks is encouraging visitors to use alternative forms of transportation when possible, such as Winnipeg Transit. For those who drive, the advice is straightforward: be patient and keep circling.

The loss of the 350 stalls also represents a hit to revenue — parking fees from those spots are no longer coming in. The Forks says it expects to offset that loss through rent from new businesses set to open when the development is completed in 2028.
