Woke work place haha

What describes that precisely? Sounds like CMHR potential issues are the opposite of that.

I'd consider my workplace fairly liberal. And there are no eggshells to be walked on. It's just called being respectful.

Haven't been there and have no plans on going. Maybe if it was free I would go. I like the building though, it has an interesting design.
Racism is called out everywhere nowadays, having manners is now racist, being on time is now racist, math is now racist!

believe that the CMHR is offering more free days, think Friday nights are now free, seriously who would pay to visit it!?

It says her initial report was released so I guess that would be your proof. I would think the report would have examples as well.

Palestine supporters hold demonstration inside Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters stormed the Canadian Museum for Human Rights Sunday morning to bring attention to the human rights crisis in Gaza during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. The rally was organized by several support and solidarity groups, including Queers for Palestine and Peace Alliance. “We hope that the museum hears us ask for Palestinian voices to be heard,” said co-organizer Alison Moule.

The rally took place on Human Rights Day -- 75 years after the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on Dec. 10, 1948. “It’s also 75 years that Palestine has been occupied,” said Ramsey Zeid with the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba. “The Nakba happened on May 15, 1948 which has also been 75 years. So it’s been 75 years of oppression.”

Demonstrators say the museum does not mention the 1948 Nakba, or the expulsion and flight of Palestinians. They also claim the museum excludes Palestinians from its exhibits. “There are exhibits that focus on genocides globally, but there is almost no exhibit that mentions Palestine and the Palestinian liberation struggle,” Moule said.

The museum said it does include stories that touch on Palestinian experiences. In a statement to CTV News, the museum’s vice president of exhibitions Matthew Cutler said the museum has “been working with the Palestinian-Canadian community to develop new gallery content that will help Canadians better understand the human rights violations Palestinians experience every day.”

Cutler added, “Our galleries will never be able to capture every element and experience of human rights. We are thankful for upstanders, protesters, educators and others who, like in today’s protest, add context, perspectives and stories to complement what we are able to offer in our galleries.”

During the rally, dozens of demonstrators staged a 64-minute “die-in,” with each minute representing each day since the current conflict began on Oct. 7 when Hamas militants attacked Israel. The die-in aimed to bring attention to the thousands of Palestinians killed by Israel’s retaliation.

Believe it or not, I recall hearing stories of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians being deliberately excluded from the CMHR due to political reasons (Asper's were notoriously pro-Israel). IN fact, I can recall hearing stories of when Gail Asper, or Friends of the CMHR were being interviewed on the radio, reports circulated that some callers were hung up on when they brought up the issue of the treatment of the Palestinains.

The plight of the Palestinian's just never fit the narrative of the so called human rights museum.

Did anyone actually think it would?

Wonder if they will show the dead people of Israel at the hand of Hamas?
The IDF targets Hamas and yes there are civilian casualties ( which we should expect to be better mitigated and avoided at all cost ). Hamas targets Civilians and calibrates.
BOTH ARE COMMITING TERRIBLE ACTS.

This has been going on for 1000's of years and basically at this point will never end unless Palestine is allowed to be a free country with international support. And at this point again, with the current world order, Israel will continue to dominate.

I am a big supporter of Israel, but saying the IDF is "only" targeting Hamas fighters is complete bullshit, and we all know it. If you believe otherwise, you are in denial. There is overwhelming evidence now that Israel is deliberately targeting hospitals, infrastructure, and religious institutions to make life as unbearable as possible for the entire civilian population. Just a few days ago, three Israeli hostages (that had been abandoned), were waving white flags, and asking IDF soldiers to rescue them. All three were shot and killed regardless. If that does not tell people the reality of the conflict, then I am not sure what will.

It would be like denying residential schools ever existed in Canada. At any rate, the fact that the Human Rights abuses against the Palestinians is barely mentioned in the CMHR, tells people all they need to know about the museum itself.

Legal action looms over Nakba portrayal at CMHR in Winnipeg

Aerial view of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on April 28, 2024.

A prominent Israeli legal organization is threatening legal action against the Canadian Museum for Human Rights over an upcoming exhibit on the Palestinian Nakba, alleging the Winnipeg museum is promoting a politically one-sided narrative that could fuel antisemitism and violate federal law.

Shurat HaDin – Israel Law Center announced this week it has formally sent a legal demand letter to the museum’s board of trustees and senior leadership over the exhibit Palestine Uprooted: Nakba Past and Present, scheduled to open next month at the CMHR in Winnipeg.

The organization alleges the federally funded museum is abandoning its mandate as an educational institution by presenting what it describes as an unbalanced portrayal of the 1948 creation of Israel and the displacement of Palestinians.

“Publicly funded institutions have a responsibility to approach contested historical issues with fairness, balance, and intellectual integrity,” Shurat HaDin president Nitsana Darshan-Leitner said in a statement included with the legal filing.

“A national human rights museum cannot become a platform for politicized narratives that risk contributing to division and misunderstanding, including here by erasing Jewish history, delegitimizing Jewish self-determination, or contributing to hostility against the Jewish community.”

The seven-page legal letter, dated May 14, gives the museum 14 days to respond or face potential legal proceedings.

The exhibit focuses on Palestinian accounts of the Nakba — Arabic for “catastrophe” — referring to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war surrounding the creation of the State of Israel.

According to the CMHR’s public description, the exhibit explores “ongoing forced displacement and dispossession of Palestinians” through artwork, artifacts, photographs, videos and personal stories from Palestinian Canadians.

Shurat HaDin argues the exhibit presents a one-sided political narrative while omitting key historical context, including Jewish historical ties to the region, Arab rejection of the United Nations partition plan, the broader regional war in 1948 and the displacement of Jewish refugees from Arab countries.

“The creation of the State of Israel pursuant to international legal and diplomatic processes is not, in itself, a human rights violation,” the letter states.

The legal group further alleges the exhibit could create a “hostile or poisoned environment” for Jewish Canadians at a time of rising antisemitism across the country.

The filing also raises concerns about the museum’s advisory process, alleging the exhibit’s consultation network includes activists and academics with openly anti-Zionist views while mainstream Jewish organizations were excluded from meaningful participation.

Several Jewish organizations publicly criticized the museum after the exhibit was announced last year.

The Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada suspended collaboration with the CMHR over the issue, while organizations including the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs and B’nai Brith Canada said they had repeatedly asked to be consulted on the exhibit’s development.

Shurat HaDin also alleges the exhibit risks turning the national museum into “a platform for partisan political advocacy” rather than a balanced educational institution grounded in human rights principles.

Among its demands, the organization is calling on the CMHR to suspend work on the exhibit in its current form, commission an independent legal and scholarly review, create a more balanced advisory process and publicly clarify that the creation of Israel should not be characterized as a human rights violation.

The organization also requested the museum preserve all documents related to the exhibit and notify its insurers of possible litigation.

The CMHR has previously said the exhibit focuses on Palestinian lived experiences and was developed through consultations with Palestinian Canadians and scholars.

On Thursday, the Winnipeg Sun reached out to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with three questions. “Amanda Gaudes, Media Relations Specialist for the Museum, told the Winnipeg Sun in an email reply, ‘We just received the letter you’re referring to below, and as a result, we won’t be providing further response at this time.’”

The allegations outlined in the legal demand have not been tested in court.

I wonder how widespread the use of civilian areas such as schools and hospitals etc. are being used by Hamas as human shielded military bunkers.

For the past 2 years, the answer is simple: none.

Hamas can't hide in hospitals and schools, when every single school and hospital in Gaza has been turned into rubble.

Was just an excuse to destroy buildings & infrastructure. And they did so with no real "intelligence reports". The IDF spends something just under a billion dollars on propaganda ads. Think of the issues you could solve in your country with $700+ million. Nope, they spend it on propaganda ads to justify their actions.

Them issuing a lawsuit because the exhibit displays facts they don't like? Colour me surprised.

I find it frustrating that the Israel Law Centre is trying to pressure a Canadian museum that features significant positive content on Israel/Jewish people to not tell the other side of the on-going story (Palestinian Nakba).

I really feel it should be all or none and if its none that includes removing at least one of the permanent galleries.

There have been lots of acquisitions in the past that the CMHR is a bit too pro-Israel and this latest one is going to be a real test of that.

If I'm not mistaken, do they not have an entire floor just for Israel + the Holocaust?

There is a floor for The Holocaust and other genocides. There is little mention anywhere in the museum of Palestine or Palestinians (and I know the museum pretty well). The threatened lawsuit is a big nothing burger - they are hoping that it will spook the museum into dropping the Nakba exhibit, but it won't.

Something to keep in mind with all this is that none of the "critics" have even seen the exhibition yet - their objection is really borne out of a fear that a perspective might be presented that challenges Israeli nationalist narratives. It's frankly kind of embarrassing to see some of the organizations that have suspended cooperation with the museum over this. I suspect all this will actually blow over relatively quickly. I haven't seen the exhibit either, but I know some of the curators, and the idea the CMHR is a radical antizionist institution is laughable. It's a national museum and that makes it cautious and relatively slow moving in any direction.
