Here's more about Seattle's Federal Way Link extension that opened today.

(As for East Link, aka the 2 Line, I've heard May at the latest, not as a target date.)

The Finch West LRT opened yesterday in toronto to lackluster reviews, complaining about running speeds. The line runs so slowly (50 minutes to cover 10 kilometres) that many people can literally outrun it:

In addition to this weekend's Seattle and Toronto openings, Buffalo opened the short DL&W extension today.

Seattle's East Link (2 Line) will fully open Saturday, March 28. Previously they'd said April or end of May at the latest.

This will double frequency interlining with the existing 1 Line from Lynnwood to Chinatown/ID to 4-5 minutes (depending on time of day), then split off to one new station in each in Seattle and Mercer Island then hit the already-open stretch from Bellevue to Redmond.

This will be the biggest new service in Seattle since the first line opened in 2009.

Let me add that 1 Line trains are often jam packed, and the capacity will be very useful even where it only adds to current service. Also several stations to the east are either legit downtowns or big TOD/job centers (like the 50,000-person Microsoft HQ), and the new ridership should be tremendous.

Stadium service will be particularly useful. Stations are right next to Seahawks, Mariners, and Husky (FB/BB) games, and the current service is packed for a long time after and especially before each. The World Cup is a particular key point, both for crowd levels and the ability of fans to easily travel from Eastside hotels.

Is the northern part of the line currently much busier than the southern part? I hope so because the new service pattern will make the capacity very lopsided.

The southern part may have capacity issues. It did pre-COVID when they had to run three-car trains instead of four due to rolling stock availability. Now they're all four cars. Service will initially peak at eight-minute frequencies on each line, but I've heard it could go to six with some continued investment in the underlying tech. Bus service will continue to be needed on similar routes, and our buses get decent investment.

That said, the northern portion covers the densest parts of the city--Downtown through Capitol Hill, the U District, and Roosevelt. It deserves four-minute service or better.

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT opened in Toronto on Sunday, February 8th:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/livestory/line-5-lrt-eglinton-crosstown-opening-9.7077945

https://globalnews.ca/news/11656920/eglinton-crosstown-lrt-opens/

This marks the end of a 15- year construction period. The line has opened to better reviews than the Finch West LRT which has been dogged by long travel times.

The line includes a 10-kilometre (6 mile) underground portion which effectively operates as a metro line with 13 new stations as well as a 9-kilometre surface section running in the median of the road with 12 stations. Total travel time on the corridor has dropped by roughly an hour from ~120 minutes to just under an hour. Further speed improvements are expected in the coming months to bring travel times down to closer to 45 minutes.

This also marks the largest transit line opening in Toronto by length since the opening of the Bloor-Danforth subway line in 1966.

A 9.2-kilometre (5.7 mile) western extension is already under construction with a completion date still 5-7 years out. The western extension is entirely grade separated and will function as a metro, much like the central underground portion of the newly opened line.

Thanks to everyone for the notes. I do always come back and update, if not right away. Made the following updates to the front page list:
  • Unbundled Seattle's two LRT projects to list them separately rather than together, per mhays, and moved the Federal Way extension to complete, per SpongeG
  • Added Toronto Yonge subway extension (5 mi / 8 km) to the construction list, per Innsertnamehere
  • Moved Toronto's Finch West LRT & Eglington Crosstown LRT from construction to finish, per Innsertnamehere
  • Added SF's SMART Healdsburg commuter rail extension (9 miles) to the construction list, per homebucket
  • Moved Montreal's Deux Montagnes REM branch to complete (19 mi / 31 km), per Innsertnamehere
  • Moved Buffalo's DL&W LRT extension to complete, per Tcmetro
  • Moved Honolulu's Skyline Phase 2 to complete (nobody noted it in the thread but it happened in the fall)

Congrats Toronto especially on the multiple long-awaited major openings!

And since nobody else mentioned it, Honolulu's Phase 2 Skyline opened in October.

Thanks!

Toronto should have the two Eglinton lines split out like Seattle - completed this year would be:

Toronto Eglinton Crosstown - 12 miles (19 km)

Still under construction would be:

Toronto Eglinton Crosstown West - 6 miles (9 km)

The first, 3.9-mile phase of the Los Angeles Metro D Line extension has opened to great fanfare.

Passengers wait to board the first train to arrive at the Metro D Line at the Wilshire/Fairfax Station in Los Angeles on Friday. (Genaro Molina / Los Angeles Times)
