Projects Residential111 West 57th Street2022

Reaching tall over Central Park South stands the new 111 West 57th Street tower, designed by SHoP Architects with interior architecture by Studio Sofield and developed by JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group. With a total height of over 1,400 feet, the residential tower is among the tallest new structures in the city. Celebrating the golden era architecture and complementing the historic Steinway Hall attached to the project’s base, the building’s New York design evokes without mimicking, the grandeur of the art deco period while utilizing state-of-the-art engineering and technology. To enhance the elegant profile of the feathered or hyper-setback tower clad in terracotta and bronze, L’Observatoire International developed integrated facade lighting, like an intricate embroidery of gold thread.

Lighting is integral to the experience of the exterior of 111 West 57th Street. The tower is topped with a crown that glitters at night, radiating like a beacon within the city, and which projects the cadence and vibrancy of the Steinway music hall at its base. The north and south elevations of the building’s crown feature dynamic lighting that can be thematically programmed, while on the east and west facades, L’Observatoire International worked closely with SHoP Architects to embed lighting directly into the system of terracotta facade panels. The tower’s twisting terracotta facade smoothly drapes over its structure like a rich fabric. Rather than illuminating the building through continuous lighting, which would mute the undulating surfaces of the terracotta, the soft waves of the terracotta are accentuated in ripples of light that wash over the facade at night. Emphasizing the rich texture of the tower’s slim outlines, the illumination cascades down to connect the upper crown to the building’s grand lobby on street level.

In addition to the facade, L’Observatoire International’s designed lighting for the lobby and residences, which carefully balance ambient and accent lighting. The lobby’s lighting design references the majestic spirit of Steinway Hall with a theatrical lighting concept. The procession of lobby spaces is carefully detailed to honor the landmarked interiors. The lighting emphasizes its ornamentation, from the bronze elevator doors to the gold and silver leaf murals.

L’Observatoire International designed the residential lighting to convey warm and intimate environments, which enjoy a spectacular view over the city beyond. At the same time, the use of low-level and concealed lighting creates a feeling privacy and protection. A range of custom decorative light fixtures designed by Studio Sofield adds dramatic, glowing moments that echo the tower’s elegant and classic craftsmanship.

Perhaps most spectacularly, at night 111 West 57th Street’s lighting design is in tune with the lunar cycle, transitioning from a dimmer glow during the full moon to a brighter luminosity with a crescent moon. The tower’s lustrous crown connects to the surrounding city, sparking a conversation between the moon, the skyline, and the inhabitants of the city.

^ The lighting of this and CPT, as they are planned, hasn't shown up fully.

This tower has been in the news a lot recently due to the nature of the Canadian govt's purchase of a condo there, but I haven't been following it closely. Meanwhile, the space at the base is taking shape.

Two new tenants at famed NYC Midtown towers bolster luxury retail market

By Steve Cuozzo
Sep. 8, 2024

Quote:
Two momentous new leases have been signed at premier Midtown locations, giving a boost to the entire Manhattan luxury retail market as well as to their landlords.

Our sources must remain anonymous in the post-pandemic world of omerta. Strict non-disclosure agreements do wonders for lawyers’ billable hours without doing much to keep information secret.

Venerable, London-based auction house Bonhams is moving to 111 W. 57th St., the pencil-thin condo tower developed by Apollo Commercial Real Estate Finance, JDS Development Group and Property Markets Group, our moles revealed.

Bonhams will move and expand from about 30,000 square feet at Minskoff Equities’ 590 Madison Ave., where it’s been since 2008, to more than 41,000 square feet at its new location. It’s a huge coup for 111 W. 57th, one of the city’s most-watched new residential projects.

It wasn’t immediately known when Bonhams will move. But we learned it will occupy the landmarked former Steinway Piano showroom at the tower’s base, as well as an adjacent, glass-wrapped atrium.

Meanwhile, residential sales are said to be booming in the 1,428-foot-tall condo tower designed by SHoP Architects, which has been called “the world’s skinniest skyscraper.”

Sorry to bump this thread, but I’ve never been able to find an answer to the following question while researching this topic.

Does anyone know the status of the proposed crown and exterior lighting of the Steinway Tower?

Originally, there was a plan to illuminate the crown and profile of the tower (see the links below), but that has never come to fruition, despite the building being complete for a few years now.  Will this architectural lighting scheme still be implemented or has it been canceled; if the latter is true, why?  The building looks incomplete without this essential feature.

The Steinway Tower is probably the most beautiful skyscraper built this century, and seeing its architectural beauty diminished by the absence of this lighting plan is not only bewildering — considering how extraordinary the building is (much lesser buildings have been shown greater respect in this area) — but disappointing.  I was greatly anticipating the actualization of this plan and have been mystified by its — I would assume at this point — cancellation.  Any elucidation that can you provide would be greatly appreciated.

According to an article in 2015, "At night, the crown will be illuminated by New York-based L’Observatoire International.  According to the firm’s page on the project, “the lighting evokes jewelry and will shimmer down the cladding of this very feminine and graceful tower.  Dynamic changes to the lighting are linked to the lunar cycle and visually connect the crown to the ground level.”

Speaking of lighting, I realize that this thread isn’t about the Steinway Tower, but does anyone know what happened to the architectural lighting plan for said building? I apologize for asking here, but there doesn’t seem to be a thread dedicated to the construction of (just a photo page) the Steinway.

I’ve contacted the architect, building owner, and the company tasked with this undertaking — in addition to asking around on Reddit — but I’ve never be given, nor found, an answer to this question.

This is NYC’s priciest home for sale — and it’s located in the world’s skinniest tower

On Thursday, according to StreetEasy, this four-level nest listed at 111 W. 57th St. on Manhattan’s Billionaires’ Row — the building itself being the skinniest skyscraper on the planet and the second-tallest residential building in the United States.

Listed for $110 million, moreover, the grand unit is now the priciest for sale in New York City, StreetEasy additionally shows.

NYC aims to shutter a ‘hot Asian lady’ brothel on Billionaires’ Row — after undercover officer was offered ‘manual stimulation’

By Lauren Elkies Schram
May 11, 2026

Quote:
A spa on Billionaires’ Row has been accused of operating a seedy brothel, advertising “Sweet, sexy, hot Asian” women, according to a complaint filed by the city.

The 57 Star Beauty Spa, which abuts supertall 111 W. 57th St. — currently advertising a $98 million listing — has been the target of two undercover police stings since December.

“It was somewhat of a little-known secret,” said a former fourth-floor tenant, who relocated about three years ago. “It was obvious. It was disguised as a massage parlor, but it was never open.”
Quote:
The former tenant, who asked for anonymity, said he never saw any employees and the lights would only go on at weird hours of the night.

The business was one of the reasons he relocated.

The complaint obtained by The Post, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, calls for a full one-year closure and $1,000-a-day fines against landlord Tsukiji KK Corporation and other named respondents.

A 911 call in October prompted an NYPD investigation into the house of ill repute, per the complaint.
Quote:
On Dec. 3 and Jan. 7, an occupant at 57 Star Beauty Shop agreed to engage in manual stimulation of an undercover officer in exchange for a fee, the city claims.

57 Star Beauty Shop advertisements for “Sweet, sexy, hot Asian lady” and “Real Slim Busty Beauties Asian Models” were allegedly found at HarlotHub.com and SkipTheGames.com last week. The latter website was also used to bust NoMad Suites hotel in January.

Owner Melinda Her denied the allegations, insisting to The Post — via a friend who translated from an Asian dialect to English — that they only do facials, head therapy and massages.

The 57 Star Beauty Shop is on the second floor of 115 W. 57th St., a six-story, seven-unit walkup. Its legitimate massage services are splashed across the front window, and a sandwich board on the street promotes 30 minutes of “aroma relaxing bodywork” for $58. Another board offers a 30-minute head therapy special for $58. The first floor of the property is occupied by a deli, JIH Market.

To the east of the building is 111 W. 57th St. The ritzy building has a penthouse in contract for roughly $42 million, which would mark the priciest residential deal so far this year along the thoroughfare if it closes. To the west of the building is 117 W. 57th St., a small residential building with an Angelo’s Pizza at the base.

Chances are, that's not her real name. But I always assume these places all have the same practices, happy all the time.
