Sale of Connecticut Sun approved by WNBA, team to become Houston Comets in 2027

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Houston Comets are officially back.

The WNBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the Connecticut Sun to Houston businessman Tilman Fertitta from the Mohegan Tribe on Wednesday. The franchise will revive the Comets’ name and branding, who last played in 2008, and will play at the Toyota Center starting in the 2027 season.

Officials spoke Thursday afternoon and shared a look inside where the Houston Comets will call home in Htown.

Fertitta and his company, Fertitta Entertainment, also own the Houston Rockets and reportedly paid $300 million for the Sun. That’s a record for the sale of a WNBA franchise. The last WNBA team to relocate was the San Antonio Silver Stars, who moved to Las Vegas to become the Aces in 2017.
