It appears Porter has added two additional frequencies in winter to FLL on Friday's and Sunday's to make it 9x weekly. I now see 8x weekly to CUN with an extra departure on Friday's. If you include TS it is 11x weekly. MCO still shows daily. MIA is 4x weekly and appears to now be bookable through AA.com. I picked the last week of January as reference point.

Good catch - I checked over the Christmas holidays and it looks like the second frequency for CUN is running days 145 at peak - so up to 10x weekly as promised - 13x if you count TS.

Being bookable on AA's website makes a difference, especially for non-YOW point-of-sale (POS). One thing I don't get is why PD's going with 0700 MCO & FLL departures. Can't capture any connecting feed with that.

Today’s departure count: 87

Today's cancellation count (so far): 1

Because people want to be on the beach by lunch or get to their cruise ship. I know when I'm in vacation mode, I just want to get on the plane and be gone.

That may be fair but if local O&D only fills 2/3 of the aircraft because of zero connections, you're losing a bucket load of $ instead of waiting 2.5 hours to capture a morning bank of arrivals.

Today’s departure count: 89

Today's cancellation count (so far): 2 - including AC 345, a 789

Unless the delay to catch a few more transfers means that you loose 1/2 of your O&D crowd to other options - because passengers can't get to their ship in time if they arrive later, or another carrier gets them to the beach sooner.

I'm pretty sure that the schedules are not arrived at by picking random times. There is, I'm sure, a purpose behind the decisions.

That might have come across as overly negative. It wasn’t meant to be. I have certainly had the same kind of questions about things. The ‘What were they thinking?’ questions. Over the years I have found that most of the time there are factors that I was unaware of, or just overlooked as unimportant, that informed the decisions that were made.

That said, there are certainly times when decisions are not based on sound information. For instance, an airline might try a flight time that they have no experience with to suss out whether it will work. i.e., maybe they will try being the very first flight in the morning to see if that captures more riders than offering a flight that is just after a competitor’s flight.

With some exceptions, Porter has thrice-weekly 1515 departures to FLL to catch connections on days 3/5/7. For 2/3 of these it’s in addition to the 0700, and the other on day 3 replaces the 0700.

MCO seems less “optimized” for connections although there are some PM departures scattered around the calendar, while TPA and RSW are both PM oriented departures (1500+) and MIA is AM only around 0900.

I flew Porter back from Orlando this winter and approx 20 passengers were connecting to Vancouver flight. Our Orlando flight was late but they waited the Vancouver flight. I was surprised to see all the Vancouver folks waiting at the baggage carrousel after US customers, they had to re-check their bags. Probably a one hour delay for Porter.
If I'm Porter I am making any further expansion into YOW contingent on Connection Centre

Porter Airlines seeks ways to attract scarce talent to Ottawa

By Mia Jensen, OBJ
May 11, 2026

From pilots to air traffic controllers, the aviation industry is facing a global shortage of skilled labour. In response, at least one airline flying out of Ottawa is finding ways to make itself and the city more competitive to attract and retain talent.

For Dax Mistry, a line maintenance manager for Porter Airlines at YOW, finding and training aircraft maintenance technicians is a challenge.

“The whole industry is feeling it,” he said. “We’re seeing a lot of retirements out of aircraft maintenance. So we’re looking to acquire more staff to come in. One hundred per cent, it’s competitive.” According to a 2025 report from CAE Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of aviation training technologies, North America will need 132,000 new aircraft maintenance technicians by 2034 to keep pace with growing passenger demand.

The report found that, globally, dropout and failure rates are high among trainees. It said that maintenance technician programs present several challenges for candidates, including training duration, financial barriers, technical and academic complexity and high emotional demands.

With those issues in mind, Mistry said Porter is focused on building out its own talent pipeline.

In 2024, Porter opened a 150,000-square-foot maintenance facility near the Ottawa International Airport. Mistry said the facility, which contains two aircraft hangars and represents a $125-million investment, was built to accommodate the company’s existing De Havilland Dash 8-400s and its growing fleet of Embraer E195-E2s.

Nearly 100 employees across a variety of roles currently work in the Porter facility, according to Mistry. Over time, the company intends to grow the team to 200, including aircraft maintenance engineers, shop technicians, store clerks and administrative staff.

“Our goal is always to have as many employees as we can,” said Mistry. “These aircraft are going to need maintenance.” Mistry said increased competition in the industry has drastically changed the hiring process for young workers.

“When I was coming into the industry, my professors told us that you’re gonna have to go up and work out North, get your licence. Then you can come on to the line. Any old-timer in this industry will tell you they had to work up North and freeze their hands off before coming down around this area to do line maintenance.” Given the new dynamics, when Porter opened its facility it announced a partnership with Algonquin College to provide training and financial aid to students working toward careers in aviation. The following year, Porter increased its support for the aircraft maintenance technician program with a $25,000 contribution toward scholarships and other financial awards for students. At the time, Algonquin program coordinator Daniel Maslow said in a news release that the aviation industry’s growth in Canada has created “exceptional opportunities” for aircraft maintenance professionals, with thousands of positions expected to open in the coming years. “Our partnership with Porter shows that we understand the urgency of this issue and that we are working together to address the industry’s pressing need for skilled talent,” said Maslow. Overall, Porter’s initiatives will support 10 second-year students in the program each year. Through the partnership, Porter has begun bringing on co-op students to give them hands-on training within the facility.

Though the program is still in its early stages, Mistry said he’s encouraged by early results.

“We have apprentices who just got out of school, who are working towards their licence (working alongside) licensed mechanics who can help them learn,” he said. “That’s the great thing about this partnership: it allows those apprentices to come right into the industry.” The challenge, he said, is keeping talent in the city long-term. “As much as we would like to say that working here is the same as working in Toronto or Billy Bishop (Toronto City Airport), sometimes it’s not,” he said. “If you want to gain experience in the Toronto market, you can work at our Toronto bases. And we promote that.” Still, Mistry said the partnership is the first step toward keeping talent in Ottawa, connecting students to training opportunities that can lead to jobs and allowing them to make local industry connections.

From there, Porter’s job is to make the local facility attractive to talent.

“We try to be as competitive as we can, and that includes pay and everything,” he said. “We want to make them stay here and make it a wonderful place to work. I stayed here. I did my whole career here. I think it’s a fantastic place to work. And we’re the fastest-growing airline in Canada, so there’s tons of opportunity.” For some employees, Ottawa itself has become part of the appeal. “It’s a fantastic place to live,” he said. “I did Toronto to Kitchener for seven-and-a-half years, and an hour-and-a-half drive in traffic both ways. Here, I live 30 minutes away. It’s a great drive in. You don’t get that in Toronto.”

In total, Porter has more than 500 Ottawa-based employees, including pilots, flight attendants, customer service agents and technical operations staff.

“The team member base has grown significantly over the last three years,” Edmond Eldebs, senior vice-president and chief commercial officer, told OBJ recently. “As we’ve added more flights, it’s given us the opportunity to build a large crew base here and source talent from the Ottawa market.” The airline’s network has nearly tripled in size in the past three years, which Eldebs said has led to more than 2,500 new hires, mostly pilots and flight attendants, across the organization. Ottawa, he said, has had success attracting those staff.

“We have a great culture. People love working for an organization that’s growing. At Porter, you get access to an amazing network, in addition to all the other benefits and perks we have. We’ve seen benefit from that.” Now, Porter has the largest presence of any airline in the Ottawa market, with 27 non-stop routes between the capital and destinations across North America and the Caribbean.

According to Eldebs, the new routes it has introduced to the local market have been a success with travellers. Combined with the new maintenance facility, he said Ottawa has become a cornerstone of the airline’s operations and growth strategy.

AC342/345 got replaced with AC2342/2345 on a 7M8. When I looked earlier, 342 was completely full and 345 was full in Y and only had a few seats available in the premium cabins. Looks like the redeye and early morning departure didn't operate today or for the next couple days either.

AC888/889 were full in PY on both directions. 889 was 18/31 in J and 888 is 25/30.

Re: PD's connecting timings, I wonder if they'd run a YVR red-eye in the winter to feed the early morning MCO/FLL flights.

And Dominion301, in January MIA was 57% s/b and 43% n/b, which makes sense as the service was 3x weekly so only the fourth and final flight would have had somewhat equal n/b and s/b loads as week long vacationers that were on the inaugural headed back north.

You say people want to get to the beach by noon. OK, sure. Let's also look at this from a viability standpoint.

FLL 0700 departure means:
1. No feed southbound
2. Directly opposite 620am AC MAX 8 which has an established customer base here and will enjoy a seat-mile cost advantage of 15% minimum (my guess)
3. 4am ish wakup call for most passengers
4. Arrive FLL hours before hotels are available
5. Northbound turn (11am ish) is earlier than majority would prefer
6. Cruise PAX usually fly in day before

Every single one of those is mitigated with a 930a southbound roll

Even things such as the customs crowding during the early USA bank vs a couple hours later.

It's not a frame issue as PD is swimming in capacity. Perhaps it was gating issues in USA? Those should be alleviated now w Spirit's demise (* esp FLL).

I'm not saying Ottawa is an easy nor lucrative market but it's stable and a perfect foundation to layer on feed

I just think Porter scheduling is fumbling the bag here

Re: FLL, PD ran a 0700 departure this year as well. Since it was double daily, the afternoon southbound was well-timed for connections from the west coast. Won't be the case this year if the schedule holds.

On a separate note, AC's first XLR paid YOW a visit today, the first stop after it's delivery flight to YQG a couple weeks ago. It then left for YUL later in the afternoon.

This is precisely the point I was making. It wasn’t a commentary about “customer satisfaction”, but rather impact to operations.

Those delayed connecting pax are causing downstream departure delays, misconnects, APPR claims, and whatever other operational headaches exist, in no small part due to inefficient north/south connections, especially northbound.

I’ve had the same observations as you on northbound flights from FLL. I’m also insisting on a connection centre if I’m PD.

The problem for the airport authority is undertaking big capital expense with only Porter (vulnerable) as the potential client. Nobody else will hub here to any significant degree.

Sorry I should have been more specific. I was referring to 0700 departure times at this time of year (May-October). In the dead of winter from December-March, sure it's easy to fill 120-132 seats on O&D alone to FLL but in July not so much and that's why I'm puzzled as to why they're using an O&D departure time that misses connections in low season. Except for this weekend, the fares/yields are reflective of a lot of unsold inventory on the outbound over the next few weeks to FLL & MCO (May 25th one-way to MCO for $214 taxes-in).

I paid a little over $300 per person round trip in Reserve YYZ-FLL March 20-28, booked in late October. It was cheaper to book Reserve at that time than it would have been to book Classic with luggage and seat selection. Found the same last summer to SFO, booked well in advance.

well said. maybe airport is questioning the viability as well. hell, I booked 6 tix to Aruba in Jan and I'm starting to wonder

If it were so easy, why were YOWMIA LFs where they were? And even if you could fill 132 seats with local PAX, why not allow others cities to vie for those 132 seats (with 930ish departure) to drive better yield?

I mean AC has been running 321s at 530am and 6am to YYZ filled w Ottawa passengers competing with Torontonians for seats all over their network AM bank, driving up prices. Why don't PD do the same for YOW? There is zero reason for PD to overfly YOW to route pax thru YYZ to destinations served from YOW while simultaneously reducing their ASMs here
