This is the render, it may or may not be current.

Nothing has been submitted to the city or publicly released by the developer. Everything is currently speculation, including the Daily Hive article, based on this concept below.

Thanks, that looks ok from the street level. If the "datacenter" portion is at the Expo street level below, that would be fine IMO.

I believe that is the earlier version which was hotel + data centre. The new version may be only data centre, and thus would likely have a less friendly ground level.

I think the data centre is the dark building that would be where the surface parkade is located (?)

It works for a podium, because it boosts the potential light pollution-complainers above the level of the Northern Lights Display at BC Place.
There would still be retail at grade and one story said that weird circular restaurant pavilion is still being built.

Interesting video on the effects of data center infrasound on quality of life and human comfort.

It seems like it could potentially be extremely problematic to construct a data center in one of the densest location in the country

Those data centres are like close to 1,000,000 square feet of square foot of space that needs to be cooled. I assume this would be tiny in comparison. And some of the examples like xAI's data center isn't most of the noise generated from the mobile gas turbines?

Some relevant quotes from the article:

Quote:
Telus Corp. says it will develop two data centres in Vancouver and expand an existing facility in Kamloops to handle artificial-intelligence workloads – all of which will require a combined 150-plus megawatts of electricity by 2032.
Quote:
The data centre in Kamloops will come online later this year, as will a data centre in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood that is being set up in an existing building. That facility will scale up through 2028.

The third, a new development by BC Place in downtown Vancouver, will become operational in 2029. It is slated to be the largest of the three, spanning 400,000 square feet with the capacity to consume up to 100 MW of electricity.
Quote:
Telus’s new facilities will house more than 60,000 graphics processing units from Nvidia Corp. once fully operational, according to the telecom, making it a sizable cluster for Canada.

Earlier this year:

Quote:
In the fiscal update, Allied confirmed it has extended Westbank’s loan on the property to Dec. 31, 2026, with additional security, as the project shifts from an office development to data centre use. Allied and Westbank are now seeking to sell a major portion of the site to a Canadian operator, with proceeds to partially repay the loan, while retaining a minority interest.

Allied Q1 filing

Quote:
The 150 West Georgia loan accrues interest at 7% per annum. With entitlement and power-allocation
for a large-scale AI data centre in place, the property is marketed for development and operation by
others. Allied also has additional collateral as part of this loan facility in the form of a pledge of shares in a
subsidiary partially owned by Westbank. As at March 31, 2026, accrued interest of $62,931 is included in the
outstanding balance of $257,898.

The Mount Pleasant location being the former Houtesuite building at E 5th & Quebec.

Looks like there's a render of the current design, which (assuming its not a still from a construction timelapse video) is solely a data centre now, in this announcement post:

At least there's some kind of retail or something on the bottom.

The image from the post above.

The finished building from a DH article

Quote:
A provided conceptual artistic rendering released today of this Telus AI data centre building at 150 West Georgia St. suggests that Westbank’s six-storey, 30,000-sq.-ft. standalone entertainment pavilion — featuring restaurants, bars, and other entertainment-focused businesses — will be the only component of the original mixed-use office project to move forward. It will be located immediately adjacent to the stadium within a new plaza area that effectively forms an extension of the stadium’s outdoor concourse.

Also still part of the plan is the original 30,000 sq ft standalone entertainment pavilion.

Would it not make sense to build this on cheaper land somewhere else? Like an industrial park?

That's why I was thinking but maybe there's some kind of heat recovery that can be used by Creative Energy?

EDIT: From some Telus press release

Quote:
A closed-loop liquid cooling system will reduce cooling energy consumption by 80% compared to traditional data centres, while recycling electricity as carbon-free thermal energy to heat the equivalent of 150,000 homes. Water consumption will be 90% lower than traditional data centres, with plans to incorporate recycled water from BC Place.

The City of Vancouver has received an application to rezone the subject site from I-1A (industrial) District to CD-1 (Comprehensive Development) District to allow for Bulk Data Storage use within an existing commercial building. No changing to mass is proposed. This application includes:

Converting existing below grade parking to Bulk Data Storage related uses (mechanical, electrical, garbage/recycling);
Adding a restaurant space at ground level; and
Removing all parking requirements for the development.

this is the 2nd site they are talking about in Mt Pleasant.

Recycled water from BC Place? From where, the urinals?

I'm sure it's rainwater run off in the winter months.

This project is constantly behind the curve, and won't get build. At this time in the cycle, the original office idea or a mixed office/hotel would make much more sense.
There are two other issues that should be addressed here: 1) central steam generation is inefficient due to transport induced losses - the boilers should be replaced with electric boilers located in the actual buildings, and it's absolutely doable, 2) City of Vancouver noise bylaw 6555 is deficient, as it only regulates noise based on dbA weighting and completely ignores low frequency noise (dbC). The current plant is already unreasonable when it comes to low frequencies (walk next to it), and it will not get better with a data center. Low frequencies can propagate on very long distances and cannot be abated. A center of a dense city is not a place for such a facility.

They use the roofwater for the urinals. 45 million L of water a year

Quote:
“We are also discussing how we can leverage the rainwater collected by the roof of B.C. Place stadium to further reduce water consumption of the downtown Vancouver AI data centre to as close as possible to zero,” Entwistle said.
