See my earlier comment. Mk 1 trains with the earliest livery aren't the oldest units on the system. The refurb of the initial units, that gave them the new blue/grey paint job didn't involve a total mechanical upgrade, so they're still the oldest on the system and therefore still likely to have issues warranting their replacement earlier in the program. Your comment seemed to indicate you thought the red/blue and yellow/blue were older than the blue/grey.

Hastings Street transit upgrades blocking parking near Vancouver-Burnaby border: businesses

As TransLink prepares to extend rapid bus service from the North Shore to Metrotown, businesses along East Hastings Street are raising concerns about parking.

TransLink has blocked off parts of the curb lanes in both directions on East Hastings Street between Skeena Street and Boundary Road to install stops for the R2.

Ferruccio Susin, owner of North America Sports at Hastings Street and Boundary Road, says customers can’t park in front of his shop right now while TransLink installs new bus stops.

“They’re here in the morning. I don’t know what time they start, maybe 8, or 9 o’clock,” said Susin.

“And by 3 o’clock, they’re finished. And yet the pylons are not removed. They’re not moved over a little bit.”

He says his customers have resorted to calling ahead before arriving to ask how to access the store.

TransLink and the City of Vancouver have discussed implementing 24/7 bus lanes for the R2, and Susin says he wouldn’t approve.

“Why does the Translink need a lane after hours?” he said.

“There’s only two peak hours from early in the morning when people go to work or go to school, and then in the evening when they go home.”

He says most parking on side streets is permit-only, which makes it almost impossible for customers and even deliveries to access his shop.

Susin asked, “How are we supposed to survive when we’re cutting customers for parking near, in front of the stores? The city is not providing any additional parking areas around Hastings.”

According to TransLink, the R2 extension does not include implementing new bus lanes, but says the option is still on the table and will be re-examined in 2027.

What does the store owner do when a customer is parked in front of their store, but another customer comes along and wants to park in the same location? Surely, they cannot be expected to find an available space nearby? No, they must just go home emptyhanded. Or worse, do they, instead, patronize a different merchant that miraculously always has a free parking spot at the front door?

Vancouver cancelled/deferred the bus lanes leading up to Boundary Rd.

This is just a small project to upgrade the bus stops outside Kootenay Loop for the R2. How do these small scale complaints about "construction blocking a few parking spots" for a couple of weeks get media coverage!?

Are they saying the whole curb lane was closed for the new bus stop? Or was it relocated east?

Unfortunately, the Kootenay loop area has had all sorts of construction in the last year that has been largely mishandled. I distinctly remember the Kanadell bakery complaining last year about their store access being blocked (including pedestrian/sidewalk access, not just the traffic) without prior communication.

The City of Vancouver doesn't seem to be the best at communicating construction-related closures (including an illegal lane closure on E 41st Ave last week done without permit, causing big R4 delays), so angry businesses are unfortunately going to snowball even when the work is not actually for City initiatives.

No idea why it takes 1.5 months.

It's not just adding a new bus stop, they're ripping up a full lane-width of the road to pour a concrete pad where the future bus stop(s) will be.

What a blessing in the year of our lord 2026. I assume this will be the short bus variety? I bet it will be packed.

On the radio this morning I found out there was a very typical debate in Surrey chambers about BRT. Opposition was trying to reject the BRT idea because they wanted SkyTrain like money grows on trees and transit plans are created out of thin air

The best way for that route to get SkyTrain is to build BRT, upzone around it, and eventually generate enough demand for the upgrade.

No, should be standard 40' buses. No issue with vehicle size, tour buses drive that route all day every day.

It's absolutely wild that the only transit they will get on KGB in the near term was almost turned down because they want something that nobody is going to be building anytime soon. It is such an unserious city sometimes.
