I wasn't going there on the weekend but the traffic for the Queensborough bridge southbound was backed up well into New West and Burnaby on Saturday and Sunday. I heard some people were stuck for two hours. Others complained that there was no parking, some complained that there were no hot dogs. Others said they may go once a month or so but prefer the regular costco.
I might drop by sometime this week. I saw a picture of a reel of Parmesan cheese that was near $1000.
One person was appalled that they kept the meat on tables in the open, she didn't seem to understand that it was inside a giant walk-in fridge room, lol.

New South Surrey Costco one step closer after council decision

Read more at: https://surreynowleader.com/2025/11/18/n...-one-step-closer-after-council-decision/

https://surreynowleader.com/2025/11/18/n...-one-step-closer-after-council-decision/

A new Costco is on its way to South Surrey. Surrey council voted to support third reading for the required rezoning and amendments needed for the project to move ahead at Monday night’s regular council meeting, after a public hearing was held. Several city residents voiced their support, concerns as well opposition to the land-use application, which was submitted by Costco Wholesale Canada.

TOUCH DOWN! 100% this will open by December 2026. Costco moves fast! finally more relief for the other metro Vancouver Costco's.

In related news the 20th Street overpass is in site prep and will start construction next year >> https://www.surrey.ca/about-surrey/capital-projects/20-avenue-improvements-and-highway-99-overpass

I had google AI pull these stats ... but wow the South Surrey location will be the same sie as the new Kelowna one which was impressive when I was there recently.

The current and proposed largest Costco locations in B.C. by square footage are:

-Kelowna The warehouse on Baron Road, which opened in 2022 to replace an older store, spans 167,000 sq. ft. and is currently the largest in the province.

-South Surrey A proposed new standard warehouse location is in the development process and

-Burnaby (Brentwood Town Centre area) This location has a floor area of approximately 150,000 sq. ft..

-New Westminster (Business Centre) B.C.'s first Costco Business Centre opened in November 2025 and is 146,000 sq. ft..

-Vancouver (downtown) The location in downtown Vancouver is approximately 147,000 sq. ft..

-Richmond (Bridgeport) This location measures around 141,000 sq. ft

I wonder how that square footage number was calculated some plans mention the actual warehouse was ~154K square feet with 4K more enclosed canopy space.

Supposed to start early 2026 with projected completion late 2027.

989-space parking lot....that is very large......accoridng to google AI "Typical Suburban Locations: Most standard suburban Costco warehouses are built with parking lots designed to accommodate high volumes of traffic, typically featuring around 750 spots."

so that puts the store on the very large size for parking.

This is almost the same number as St. John's, the largest Costco in Canada.. it has 1000 parking spaces.

The St. John's Costco is 182K sq. ft. and supposedly is the busiest location in Canada. The largest Costco is located in Salt Lake City at 235K sq. ft.

That's right... contributing to it's larger size, like SLC, is the fact that it's a 'hybrid' location... meaning it stocks a lot of Business Centre items.

As for busiest in Canada... it's busy, but I don't know if it's the busiest. Kelowna is often cited as being one of the busiest. I can imagine Richmond and Surrey are up there as well.

Ron.

Lesson learned from the Willingdon location. Not enough parking from Day 1.

i never have a problem at that location, the old Burnaby location though is a gong show everyday, they've changed the entrance and added a traffic light but its really bad. Surrey is also bad. I mostly go to Langley around 7 pm on any given day and never have any problems.

I haven't gona back to the New West one in a few weeks but I wonder if the hype as yoned down, parking isn't great but its a little confusing.

The roads around this area are all two lane rural/residential. The traffic is going to be ridiculous. It’s a stupid location. The city and Costco are doing some new road projects but it’s just a fraction of what needs to be done.

You are welcome. I was expecting to see some site preparations; however they only working on 20th Ave overs pass. Do you have any insights on when actual warehouse works will begin?

They just sent in "Project Detailing 1" on May 6th for engineering/off-site servicing. I think it still needs to go through final adoption by council?

Costco’s Canadian Development Pipeline
Expected Openings in 2026

Wasaga Beach, Ontario – Fall 2026
Bingham Crossing (Rocky View County), Alberta – Late 2026
East Windsor, Ontario – November 2026
Lloydminster, Alberta/Saskatchewan – Mid-November 2026
Regina West, Saskatchewan – Late 2026

Expected Openings in 2027

Thunder Bay, Ontario – Mid-2027 (estimated)
Halton Hills, Ontario – October/November 2027
South Surrey, British Columbia – Late 2027
Oakville/Burloak, Ontario – Fall 2027

Permitted / Timing to Be Announced

Edmonton (Manning Town Centre), Alberta – Building permit issued April 2026/construction under way
Caledon, Ontario – Advanced planning stage

Advanced Proposal

West St. Paul, Manitoba – Timing to be determined

Good article above. Also this article I'm posting here is insane to me, as is Wasaga beach and the area around it can support a Costco especially with a location in Barry, 45 minutes away this absolutely tells me they will open in Chilliwack sooner rather than later. >> https://www.ctvnews.ca/barrie/article/50m-costco-wholesale-breaks-ground-in-wasaga-beach/

Let alone Lloydminster, a city of 35,000 people, getting a Costco >> https://www.culturealberta.com/articles/...w-about-the-new-location-opening-in-2026

Just shows you how much Costco hates BC... I don't understand why. What's that, number 7 or 8 Costco for Edmonton.. yet Surrey with over 700k population continues to have 1?!

I think a more interesting questions is why does Alberta have so many locations. From their site:

British Columbia (14)
Alberta (18)
Saskatchewan (3)
Manitoba (3)

Ontario (38)
Quebec (22)

Newfoundland and Labrador (1)
New Brunswick (3)
Nova Scotia (2)
Prince Edward Island (0)

Yukon (0)
Northwest Territories (0)
Nunavut (0)
