Well, yeah, that. If these were built in any other top 6 Canadian city (or suburban Toronto or Vancouver), no one would be paying attention. Harley once posted an image of these towers in Calgary and you barely notice them.

In Ottawa, a developer who's able to propose and execute a very simple, cheap (budget wise) design without looking cheap (quality wise) and looks good is a frankly amazing. Buildings that are a colour, any colour, is a revelation.

The renders are OK, but man, the execution is looking cheap so far, especially for such a prominent location. I like it more than the already-decaying grey abomination that's next to it, or blights like 2 Montreal Road or 165 Chapel Street, but I dunno... to me, it's only a couple of steps above those.

It's pretty slim pickins when it comes to nicely executed buildings. J.OT13 isn't kidding about the color either. We just... don't have that.

I had occasion to be driving west on Sussex this afternoon and these towers were surprisingly prominent, and almost dead ahead. These are not (and not intended to be) high end towers, but the pop of colour is welcome in Ottawa the greige.

I don't get why you're getting offended that I think it looks great. I am not a developer, just a long time resident of Ottawa that grew up when the city didn't allow tall buildings. So of course I think this project is amazing and looking forward to how Lebreton is going to turn out. What do you want? The burj khalifa design in Ottawa? I'm sorry that my comments hurt you, didn't know this place is bad like Reddit. Seeya.

When people were going crazy over the renderings pre-construction, I thought I was out in left field as the only one who was unimpressed by the design. But seeing them go up, I've completely changed my opinion. This design may not be high end, but it would still be unique and stand out even in a city like Toronto. Their impact on the skyline is impressive.

Agreed. I live next to these and they do not look ‘cheap’. I am happy to have these going up near me and I think they add character with all of the colour.

Additionally the grey building next to it is not ‘decaying’ either. If the op before yours is alluding to the panels that are rusting on that building, that it by design and looks great in my view.

Dude I am 43 and depending on your notions "grew up in the 90s", my best friend and I back then would spend every Saturday night watching double headers on HNC and playing SimCity 2000. There was not a crane in the sky at that time. And we were both nerds like we all are here for this stuff.

I think after that early 90s recession there was literally a 10 year gap where we didn't build anything period, let alone something worthy of discussion.

I think Metropole in 2004 was the first really build to break that mold in my mind. 570 Laurier went up around the same time. I very much remembered that as I lived down the street around that time. Hilton hotel at the Hull Casino.

Aside from that it was literally a decade plus of nothing. If anyone here wants to plug some of the 75 meter plus or even less stuff that went up between the early 90s and Metropole I am all ears. Cuz it was slim pickins man.

I find the slope of the tower tops a bit odd. They are supposed to be loaded with solar panels as part of the green building features, yet the slopes face north east, so not exactly great solar orientation. This will result in the need for a much lower panel density than would be possible if the slopes had been towards the south or southwest (exactly the opposite). But maybe, in the big picture, the solar isn't really that important relative to the green features.

I find that odd as well. This doc gives more detail on the roof, but not enough to figure out the solar panel situation:

EDIT: page 17, it looks like they are angled south-west. Not sure how that works with a wall in front, even with the slits.

While I really like the gradated red cladding and the silver podium panels separately, I find there's something about the combination that clashes. I kind of wish the panels were bronze, brass or copper coloured, or maybe a warmer nickel instead of silver. Especially sandwiched with the fake stone wall, the cool metal doesn't quite belong visually.

I don't disagree about the podium railings. Still very nice and unique, but something less shiny would have been better. I feel the same about the Fed's central heating and cooling plants smoke stacks.
