It's fine, it's not like a further month delay will cost anyone anything, resulting in the need to generate higher rents from the project once completed.

I forgot this development is "only" around 1000 units, not some Brentwood or Lougheed style area plan.

The new rental towers at Terminal and Main, the parking lot and the McDonald's redevelopment will be bigger combined than this.

1780 E Broadway - Rezoning Approved

Megatowers PASS!

Ok, they're not megatowers, just normal towers. But it's still great news for the city!

The shocking thing here is that Sean Orr (COPE) was the sole no vote. This, imo, is disqualifying.

I am incredibly dismayed by his vote. COPE is part of the problem.

How could you possibly say something so insulting? He's another Jean Swanson. Adrienne Carr deserves a little better than that.

Councillor Sean Orr the first councillor to vote NO

Explicitly says he's voting against the project because more people came to the public hearing opposed to the project than showed up in favour.

"I think that should be reflected by at least one councillor."

That's weird... you'd think he'd represent his party / voters based on how he votes.

I think he reflected his party in his vote. CBC reported Councillor Maloney "acknowledged that many speakers at the public hearing expressed concern about the affordability of the housing, but said "if this project fails, there will be no affordable homes at all."

Coun. Sean Orr said he thought using city-wide average rents for the 10 per cent of more affordable units was flawed, given how sky-high rents are in Vancouver.

"We need rental units, but I'm worried that we are giving the developer double the height and we're not seeing the full public benefits that we could be seeing at the site," he told council.
"

I don't think Councillor Orr is the same as Councillor Swanson. I think he's voted in favour of other projects, while she universally voted against anything that wasn't 100% affordable rental.

He's been there for 10 minutes. Has anything remotely noteworthy come across council's agenda since then? This is the first major one and he failed.

He keeps his supporters on side by being able to say he voted no, but the project goes ahead which is what's actually best for the area. It's a bit of a no-lose situation for him. In fact I'd argue that as a politician and for him personally, this is a win.

I think there have been some Broadway Plan towers rezoned. Some involved replacing existing rental buildings. Swanson would not have supported those.

Interesting, but I guess I understand why he personally doesn't believe / trust Staff

it took 9 years, thats way too long for a city needing housing. Hopefully it will start soon.
