Statesman Demo won't be happening anytime soon. Base Power is investing $500K to renovate 100K Sq Ft of the Statesman building for a "maintenance and sevice" facility. They have a recent TDLR filing and some city permits including a site plan for this project.

Base Power is a provider of backup power systems.

Battery-powered home energy service Base Power has acquired funds to expand its operations with a Texas factory in the heart of Austin.

What to know

The company has raised $1 billion alongside 20 investors which will help build its first Texas factory in the space previously occupied by the Austin-American Statesman printing press in downtown Austin.

It seems odd that you would want to build batteries in a downtown location and then it seems even odder you would go to that much trouble for a temporary lease. Unless the 18-24 month part is wrong

Endeavor must have given them a great deal on the lease while they wait for their SE Austin factory to be built. Any money heading Endeavors way from this site is a plus since it won't be developed anytime soon.

Yeah true! Ah I missed the part about their hq being right there also that makes sense for QC on a fresh new company. I also didn’t realize the battery cells were already manufactured and they are just basically locally packaging them into their modules. Every now and then I’ll use my eyes to read lol

Base Power, Austin back away from economic incentive agreement for $265M expansion

Quote:
Home energy provider Base Power is no longer pursuing a multimillion-dollar city incentive deal for a new manufacturing facility but may still be expanding its local presence.

The Austin-based power company was founded in 2023 and currently has an office at 205 E. Riverside Drive, Ste. 100. Last year, Base announced $1 billion in fundraising to develop its first Texas factory across the street at 305 S. Congress Ave., the former home of the Austin American-Statesman that's slated to be redeveloped into a mixed-use high-rise district.

Earlier this year, city officials were set to consider another investment from Base under Austin's Business Expansion Program for a $265 million east side manufacturing and production facility. A proposed economic development agreement expected to support hundreds of new jobs was on City Council's Feb. 5 agenda but was pulled before a vote.

The city and Base had "mutually agreed not to move forward" on that outlined incentive deal, Austin Economic Development spokesperson Carlos Soto said.
