I wonder if it was still in use?
The one on the former William Farrell Building was removed many many years ago when it was re-skinned.

Not for a long time, probably decommissioned in the 90s.

That thing was a childhood landmark for me. I knew it meant we were back in the City of Vancouver

Well this is completely surprising. I love to see more hotels in our neighbourhoods. But the rental market must be looking a little shaky to lead to this flip in use:

Quote:
3215 Macdonald St text amendment

The City of Vancouver has received an application to amend CD-1 (25) (Comprehensive Development) District. The amendment is for a six-storey mixed-use building and includes:

A change in use from residential rental to hotel, including 40 hotel units;
An increase in floor space ratio (FSR) from 2.75 to 3.7; and
An increase in height from five-storeys to six-storeys.
(External link)

The proposed commercial space is to remain on ground floor as previously proposed.

Bit of an odd spot for a hotel?

I would view it more as Kalido looking for further opportunities following the policy change by the City last year to encourage new hotels. The previous rental project developer doesn't seem to be very established, with I think only one other rental project on West 10th, and there are a huge number of other rental buildings already approved across the city, and more every week under the Broadway Plan.

I'd guess it won't play well with some of the residents in the neighborhood. This was one comment on the rental building "The five storey (16.8m) development proposed would tower above the existing buildings in the area, and is simply "out of scale" for both the neighbourhood, and for the lot size."

That social housing project at Main/Cordova looks like it's proceeding but just concrete now and not mass timber

City Centre Motel/Nicola Wealth has demo/building permits issued

I think it'll be concrete, and timber?

Evoke seem to have taken on the project (it was offered for sale, and now has a sold sign on the old building), and they say it's three storeys of concrete with eight of CLT. Architects are still MA + HG Architects, with Eskew Dumez Ripple of New Orleans. The design has evolved a bit from the rezoning.

Another Safeway redevelopment. This time it’s the W Broadway & Macdonald location being done by Wesgroup. No details yet.

Will be interesting to see if they provide space for a station entrance for UBCx here.

Seems like it was around 2021

https://plposweb.vancouver.ca/Public/Default.aspx?PossePresentation=Guest&PosseObjectId=102405610

Can they rezone for a future Skytrain station or do they just do another West 4th type redevelopment?

Tiny redevelopment a block away on Broadway is going to be 6 storeys.
