what a dumb one-liner...the renters get a 'regular' set of architectural elements, while the buyers get a wiggly, fancier version....and yet the massing is similar

its like identical twins where one gets an outfit from Costco and the other from Holt Renfrew

one of the dumbest and insensitive proposal I've seen in a long time

They aren't identical twins when one of them is throwing a few million at the builder versus someone paying a few thousand a month.

Unlike the previous designs, these towers are barely cousins. The application says development may be phased, with one of them being developed ahead of the other. (There would be some savings in digging out the parkades for each tower at the same time, but they each have their own parking structure). They happen to share a developer, and the same architectural firm, but they're not intended to be a matching pair.

The East Tower actually doesn't even look that bad (ignoring the previous proposals).

They are dancing partners.

Quote:
Just like dancers coordinate their movements, the towers at
1700 Alberni have been choreographed by synchronizing their
form, expression, and aesthetics to create a cohesive pair.

Each tower has its own individual expression that balances
each other through synchronized movements and mutual
support. The east tower embodies the more rectilinear
expression of the city and urban context to the east, while the
west tower embodies the more organic and flowing nature of
Stanley Park to the west. Together the towers are both unique
and complimentary expressions, like dance partners that
have come together as a reflection of their urban and natural
surroundings.
Also some enclosed balconies.

Quote:
Enclosed balconies will enhance and extend
the use of private outdoor space, as an amenity
for residents that is usable all year and over a
broader range of weather conditions.

At the west tower, enclosed balconies are proposed for the
middle balconies at the tower, on all four facades, from
levels 3 to 38.

At the east tower, enclosed balconies may be considered on
the east and west elevations, such as from levels 2 to 6. The
balconies are located mid-point on the elevation to complement
the overall design and expression of the podium.

Looks like mosaic tiles all the way up the facade. Seems like a missed opportunity to inject some colour like the Electra.

... but the owners in the curvey building have a view of the renters' building, and the renters have a view of the cool curvey building.

The design rationale says the details on the materiality (and on the tiles) will be further explored and fleshed out as the design advances, so i don't think the colours shown now are by any means final.

In terms of colours, it would make sense for the west tower (nature) to use blue or green tiles while the urban one to lean towards reds or black.

To those complaining that renters are getting the more pragmatic design... feel free to invest your own money and develop architecturally adventurous rental buildings.

The application was approved today as a matter of consent with all councilors present.
