I was on the group who discussed the location of the first Vintage Computer Festival in Canada. I proposed Kamloops because of it's equal distances to Vancouver, Seattle, Calgary, Edmonton and airport access along with available convention hall space and off-season rates with adjoining hotels. Ultimately we settled on an event space outside Montreal in the middle of winter because even in the winter, nobody wanted to travel to Kamloops for four days because outside of event hours there was nothing else to do. An event has instead been restarted in Seattle next month after a seven year hiatus that satisfied demands for a Pacific NorthWest event.

IIRC, there is a quota applied on 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 and bingo establishments from BCLC to prevent clustering, Vegas Strip style zoning or problematic On-Reservation 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 establishments. Kamloops does not have the static or seasonal population to justify more of either. This is why on all of BC's major cities you see one casino (which is an actual casino) and one Chances Gaming Center. (which is considered a bingo hall, however can have slots)

I fully believe a forward thinking government would re evaluate the rules around clustering of casinos. I think were opting to forgo on a major opportunity for niche markets that can provide a VEGAS NORTH vibe ( given enough investment ) and government blessing.

Sorry but Kamloops IS dull. You can only golf and hike so much. After the day time nature excursions (which by the way you can do in almost any small to medium city in western Canada.) are done, what is there to do at night? Is there even a live music venue similar to Kelowna’s Revelry? 10 pin bowling? What also is pathetic about Kamloops is the lack of cinemas. 1 movie theatre (not even a VIP Cineplex might I add) with 8 screens for a city of 120,000.

Born and raised Kamloopsian here. 35 years old. And haven’t been back in 10 years save for a funeral, because there’s just nothing to do, that you can’t do anywhere else in the interior, even places like Merritt or Salmon Arm offer what Kamloops offers.

My Kids are all moving away too, I left when I was younger because of this issue as well. I do agree, there is a lack of things to do after the sun goes down. I cannot disagree with that.
I have to say there is a large contingent of " older " folk that I think have a say in this matter. I do think it will change....

When I was younger we had 5 night clubs we could go too. We were not segregated to a single place or maybe 2.

Eventually with time and growth, there WILL be changes. Its inevitable.

Looks like the 12 story at Columbia 360 is in for building permits and Tax exemption.

Well, I've been in touch with the company involved in this project. Its real yes.

EDIT. This doesn't seem correct. Turns out the company I've been in touch with is building next to the Court House.
This 12 story project seems.... un realistic. Even the company website is suspect for the design Firm involved and from the middle east with no way to contact them, and has not been updated since 2024.

Odd, If you look at the company who is the applicant for the re zoning, it IS out of Calgary, but there is no way to contact them ( and its not Elite ) but a design Firm that's middle Eastern. I've reached out to Elite to see about tender info.

So Im staring at the prints for the 12 floor project... Turns out its not ELITE FORMERS its a different company from Calgary / Ontario doing it, but its legit.

I was giving up on that one. Any idea when they would start demolition of the hotel? Would be nice to see that go and get some movement on the site.

I would say we are a next spring demo if things move at this pace. Its a company out of Ontario bidding it. Finishes haven't even been selected for the project yet. Bids are due next month and were still waiting on final selections for interior designs Units seem decent though ranging from 325 sqft to over 1000. Nice big gym for those who live there and a few commercial spaces ( maybe 5 - 6 )

Shelter got a 20 month extension. In fashion, only Reid voted against it.

Was talking to the Canco about half an hour ago and they've already made their minds up about who they are not voting for this fall. They feel like they've been completely ignored.

One of them was suggested to be something to do with a PHASE 2 down town.

Hope that ends up being something - maybe it'll be able to fill the City Gardens construction hole in my heart (as the 2nd ones basically almost done)
