Trees coffee has opened in a spot that is close to the skytrain station. I pass KFC mid afternoon and there are usually a few people coming and going. Sabi Thai spa is coming soon in a spot next to the BigWay hot pot.

Stone & Seed Cannabis is opening in Gilmore Place on Gilmore Ave side. Is Burnaby's Government only Cannabis stores changing?

From the beginning they've been moving slowly. Initially it was one government store in each quadrant, and now they seem to be (extremely slowly) allowing private stores.

I think this is the trial phase and no more stores until 2027 when they do a full review.

I've been reading further on it. The plan is to start with one private store per quadrant (just like the gov stores). They changed that in July 2024 and the first application was Jan 2025.

From a May 2025 council report:
Quote:
As per policy guidelines, no more than one new retail cannabis store per quadrant is recommended for licensing. After a two-year monitoring period following approval of the first batch of stores, and provided no significant issues arise, the City may consider additional private retail cannabis store applications.
The current review is because there's a 'stores have to be at least 1 km from each other rule' and the other two proposed stores are near the border (CoV and Coquitlam) that have a store on their side within 1 km of the proposed Burnaby store.

ah ok thanks for the info.
The Lougheed quadrant still has no cannabis store, but the Coquitlam side has a few private ones.

From DailyHive back in the summer...

Quote:
The first level — strategically on the same level as the street-level entrance into the on-site Gilmore Station on SkyTrain’s Millennium Line — is entirely leased to food and beverage businesses, including T&T Supermarket.

...

The first level’s breezeway, where the supermarket will be located, will also be home to Suntea Bubble Tea, La Ruota Authentic Neopolitan Pizza, Subway, Kinton Ramen, Galbi Korean BBQ, and Trees Organic Coffee and Cheesecake. Trees’ cafe location is strategically closest and highly visible from the station entrance.

Other food outlets confirmed for the complex entail Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, which fronts Gilmore Avenue, and Big Way Hot Pot and KFC, which face Lougheed Highway.

As for the remaining businesses that are confirmed, the list entails Happy Gilmore Golf Lounge, Club Pilates, Sabai Thai Spa, BMO, Supplement King, Seed & Stone Cannabis, Major City Vapes N Smokes, Deka Lash, Prince Barbershop, and Gilmore Family Dental.

Last week, Daily Hive Urbanized also reported Fitness World will open a 36,000 sq. ft. flagship fitness gym location on the third level of the commercial base podium — within a space originally envisioned as office space.

...

From reviewing the commercial leasing brochure, it looks like Captains Boil will be opening on level 2, unit 275.

Some article about how the T&T is delayed but no real details on when it will open or the current construction status.

Oh jee another delay, eh? What's up with all the businesses here having significant delay? I see a lot of places that have signs of new businesses coming in but then months pass by with nothing. I'm talking sandwich shops, fast food restaurants, Tim Hortons even. Heck, there was a spa that just never opened after its business sign was up on a location for years. What is going on in the last few years?

Suit Supply took almost 5 years before it finally open! Trump said Iran war may lasts years which means supply chain will forever be affected.

A lot of places do things quarterly, T&T was busy opening a few USA stores the last year or two. Also signage would go up early to entice other tenants, knowing who the big tenant will be, it's all marketing strategy.
