I do hope they find a way to resurrect the skating rink as a nice attraction for the neighborhood. But otherwise good riddance - hard to see why anyone would want to preserve a dying behemoth that’s been a drag on the surrounding neighborhood for many years with its parking garages fronting several blocks. Several mall businesses have actually moved into storefronts in the nearby area so there is a silver lining for the retail disruption.

It's brings up a bigger issue. We lost our only velodrome a few years ago, now we are about to lose the only ice rink within the city of Portland. Seems like the city should be proactive in securing replacements for these through a public - private partnership. How do we get someone at the city to take the lead in things like this?

Well, under Portland's newish City Council structure, you reach out directly to all three councillors representing the NE Portland district. Urge each of them to advocate for their constituents and create a replacement for the Lloyd Center ice skating rink.

Lloyd Center advocacy groups appeal master plan approval



Two groups are appealing the master plan to redevelop the Lloyd Center Mall.

The plan, which proposes bringing housing and open public green space to the nearly 30-acre mall site, was unanimously approved by the Portland Design Commission in early March.

That approval initiated a 14-day appeal period that closed April 2. Portland's City Council will consider the two appeals received by that deadline.

The appeals came from Matthew Henderson on behalf of the Save Lloyd Campaign and the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and from Jeffrey Kleinman, an attorney who filed on behalf of the Save Lloyd Ice Coalition and Jennifer Gilmore-Robinson.

It’s so crazy people are seriously trying to SAVE a suburban style mall near downtown, under the auspices of doing so for its supposed quaintness (maybe? Arguments are weak and confused, hard to tell what they are really claiming).

The immediate area is full of empty storefronts, even along walkable stretches of Broadway/Weidler. It’s not like there aren’t alternatives available immediately for stores. The ice rink isn’t council’s purview unless it decides to fund one with parks and rec.

Council has serious issues to deal with, this is just wasting everyone’s time.

Meanwhile, some PROGRESS in the Lloyd District on the AEG and Monqui Presents Works Progress Architecture designed, 68,000 square foot concert venue on the site of the former Nordstrom building on NE Multnomah Street!

I think the developer should just state that they will include an ice rink in the master plan for the green space and all of this will clear up.

Lloyd Center owners set closing date for iconic Portland mall



The Lloyd Center's owners have a set a date for the iconic Portland mall's last day of business.

Mall owners KKR Real Estate Finance Trust and Urban Renaissance Group will close the mall Aug. 8.

Jumbo's Pickleball, Trackers Earth and the Regal Cinemas will remain open for now, but remaining tenants will have until Aug. 31 to cease operations at the mall.

“This is a necessary step toward delivering a new future for this site and for Portland,” said Tom Kilbane, managing director of URG. “We recognize the history of Lloyd Center and appreciate the tenants who’ve operated here over the last few years. At the same time, the reality is the mall is no longer viable in its current form. As a city, we can’t afford to get stuck in the past, Portland needs this momentum for a more vibrant future.”
