Yeah I'm just trying to be funny. It'll never happen but it's well established at this point that TEAM and COPE have identical voting patterns despite the fact the reasons behind their votes come from completely different ideological positions. Development horseshoe theory I suppose?

I doubt TEAM voters are very big on safe injection sites or social housing scattered through the city.

Neither TEAM nor COPE want to approve any non-government run social housing, and neither COPE nor TEAM want injection sites on the West Side. They're more aligned than you think.

WTF does this part I bolded mean?

Vancouver's three left-wing parties agree to limit number of candidates in civic election
Kenneth Chan
Apr 15 2026

To improve their odds of beating Mayor Ken Sim and his ABC Vancouver party, the city’s three left-wing/progressive-leaning municipal political parties announced today they have reached an agreement to limit the number of candidates they will each run in the civic election on Oct. 17, 2026.

Such a strategy is intended to reduce the amount of competition between left-wing/progressive-leaning candidates, thereby improving their chances of being elected...

....Under this new agreement, hashed out ever since the public exchange of words this past winter, each party can field their own mayoral candidate, but the parties will “agree to engage in a good-faith effort to determine which progressive mayor is best suited to compete.”...(bold mine)

Frankly insane choice by OneCity here but I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Quote:
COPE, OneCity, and Greens Reach Agreement

VANCOUVER (Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Territories) – Following multiple rounds of discussions, The Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE), OneCity Vancouver, and the Green Party of Vancouver announced an agreement for the upcoming October municipal election, aimed at ensuring limits on the total number of progressive candidates on the ballot.

Under the agreement, each party will limit nominated candidates for City Council, School Board, and Park Board, for up to 13 total non-mayor candidates per party.

City Council: Each party will nominate up to five candidates
School Board: COPE and the Vancouver Green Party will run up to four candidates; OneCity will run up to five.
Park Board: COPE and the Vancouver Green party will run up to four candidates; OneCity will run up to three.

"This agreement reflects a shared commitment to collaboration while maintaining each party's distinct voice and priorities," said Liz Locke, Co-Chair of OneCity Vancouver, "OneCity sees this as a practical step to make sure progressive voters are best represented."

The agreement stipulates that each party may field their own Mayoral candidate, but that parties agree to engage in a good-faith effort to determine which progressive mayor is best suited to compete.

OneCity has nominated William Azaroff for Mayor. Greens have nominated Pete Fry for Mayor. COPE will announce a Mayoral candidate, or candidates, in the coming weeks.

It seems to me like OneCity had this one in the bag, but now effectively they along with COPE and the Greens are pledging for no one to have a majority on city council unless they sweep with their slate of candidates. When will OneCity realise that the Greens and COPE are not on their side on most issues?

I can only assume it means the less popular candidates drop out between May and time well before election day.

Four years ago, OneCity only managed 22% of the vote at best, and with only four council candidates. Can't blame them for playing it safe; Azaroff ain't no Mamdani.

They should stop wasting time. Just unite behind Pete Fry who has the name recognition and is pretty middle of the left road.

Wasting time on what? The election isn't for another 6 months

I guess I'd add that the 3 parties are widely different. Even if 1 or 2 of the 3 abandoned their mayoral run that would be a crush to their base. Kind of insulting too

Yes they differ on some issues but they all are against Sim. If they all hang in with a candidate Sim wins again. The mayor is just one vote on council anyway.

The guy who's been coasting on brand (possibly name) recognition for literally a decade? Nah.

And one of the few who responds to residents concerns..

The other two are relative nobodies.

Yes, we get it, you finally realised that Hardwick can't win and Fry is actually a NIMBY too anyway so now he's your guy.

My current likely voting priority:

OneCity
Vote Vancouver
Vancouver Liberals
ABC
Greens
Vancouver Conservatives (Are they even real?)
COPE
TEAM

This is not an endorsement for Sim, but rather saying the alternatives are worse.

In the last Council where Hardwick and Fry were both members, Justin McElroy at the CBC compiled a list of the votes cast by Council on 24 controversial topics. Hardwick voted no on 22 of them, and abstained on the other two. Fry voted yes in 20 votes, including supporting the Broadway Plan and the Vancouver Plan. The mayor, Kennedy Stewart, also voted yes 20 times, and Councilor Boyle was the only one to vote yes in all 24 votes.

Wow thanks for that misleading info. You'll find that only 11 of those topics were housing approval related and he voted no on 4 of them. Stewart voted yes on all of them.

Plus, one of those other "no's" from Stewart was "no" to the firework ban which Fry supported if you need to see his support for another NIMBY policy.

Fry is still a Strathcona NIMBY.

He's repeatedly rallied against multiple Strathcona-adjacent towers.

He was not as bad as Hardwick, and his voting pattern has shifted over the years. In 2022 the 450 Prior Street rental towers were rezoned. Councillor Fry voted in favour. Councillor Hardwick (and Swanson, naturally) voted against.
