According to the province, the investment will allow the construction of up to 29,370 housing units across the three cities.

In Regina, the Taylor Field Redevelopment project will be aided by the new funding. The infrastructure announcement is one element of the seven-acre housing development based at the former home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“The Taylor Field redevelopment is one of Regina’s most important opportunities to build the kind of housing our residents need, and today’s announcement moves us significantly closer to making that vision real,” Regina Mayor Chad Bachynski said in a news release.

In Saskatoon, the funding will support the city’s Material Recovery Centre and therefore help it towards its goal of diverting 70 per cent of waste from its landfill.

In Moose Jaw, the Spring Creek Stormwater Management Project is designed to reduce flooding and support future housing development. The project includes pipe replacements, road upgrades and rerouting pipes to improve the city’s stormwater systems.

Regina, Sask. seeing large GDP gains from Mosaic: report
In a study done by Economic Development Regina, Mosaic generated $1.9 billion on average in economic output for Saskatchewan between 2020 and 2024
Regina, Sask. seeing large GDP gains from Mosaic:

Recently, Mosaic announced a $4 million investment to help expand the province’s mining workforce. The company also operates a corporate office in Regina.

Municipal impact

EDR’s study notes Mosaic’s outreach has huge benefits for rural and resource-based communities.

“Capital spending alone supported nearly $490 million in output and more than 2,000 contractor jobs in 2024, with municipal revenues especially tied to these investments.”

There's still lots of old buildings downtown. Not every old building is a heritage building and not every old building needs to be kept. Time moves on.

It is our council's only core competency.

If you look at the historical building walk on-line you can see that a fair portion of the structures are now gone.

Again, time moves on. Would you rather keep old buildings to let them turn into rat and pigeon homes and become a fire/health hazard like the Travelers Building did?

No, I would rather the city incentivize the rehabilitation of the buildings for actually use, but that seems to be beyond them while other cities manage to do something. Of course they continue to incentivize the continued building of sprawl.

By "incentivize " I assume you mean the city pony up some cash? Updating and keeping old buildings costs a lot of money and I'm already paying enough taxes.

Taxes for stadium. Sure. Taxes for pool. Sure. Taxes for history? Nope.

We all make choices. I just don't see the city making choices that align with studies they have done in the past about making the core vibrant and livable.

Regina’s historic Credit Foncier Building has been demolished

REGINA — A historic Regina building has been demolished.

As of Monday, the old Credit Foncier Building, located at 2184 12th Ave., is now a pile of rubble.

Built in 1911, the Credit Foncier Building remained one of the few structures in Regina built before the First World War.

Its name came from its previous occupants, the Credit Foncier Franco-Canadien Mortgage Company Ltd., which occupied the space from 1912 until 1988.

Reasoning behind demolition
In 2023, the building suffered major damage from the Gordon Block fire and was left unoccupied.

In December, the owners presented a case to Regina city council on their reasons for wanting to demolish the building, citing ongoing challenges over the last two years.

“The unoccupied building quickly became the target for theft, including things like the beautiful brass railings in the interior stairwell,” said Adrian Burns, president of Western Limited, during the initial discussion.
In the future, Western Limited intends to sell the land to a new property owner.

No work at the Costco site today, but some rebar cages for the piles for foundation were delivered last week. Lots of apartments on the go in Westerra. There are about 18 permits for single story quad-plexes on the east side, probably like these ones in the Towns https://maps.app.goo.gl/NNzSQi2Fm9ULYRgY6

How do old dilapidated buildings make downtown more vibrant and livable? How is a 100 year old nondescript fire-damaged building going to solve that? I work downtown and I'll tell you it won't.
