175 Park Avenue could be one of the most recognizable buildings on the planet.

We are reaching utterly crazy heights here for a first world city.
Thanks for the informative context. Here's one more perspective: now that China has banned the construction of buildings exceeding 500 m, this 501.7 m giant would be taller than anything that will get built in that skyscraper-obsessed country in the foreseeable future. That's a big deal!

I would hold off on that 1,600 ft height just yet, until we get more specific confirmation.

I often think about the Empire State building as symbolically the spirit of New York City and a global icon not dissimilar to the Eiffel Tower. Could this building actually become the new recognized symbol of New York City? My gut tells no, because cultural symbols don’t just transcend the height of a building, they go beyond that, there are many other dimensions that come into play. However, in the event that they make a new movie and have a very large ape climb up the side of the building like King Kong then there is a possible chance of displacement.

IMO the Empire State Building will still be the main skyscraper symbol of NYC even though this building is gorgeous and spectacular. For instance, if you were to draw a bunch a buildings with with simple lines, this one will not stand out silhouette wise for the average person, whereas the Empire State Building would. Perhaps with time...

^ The article says "It’s unclear whether the skyscraper’s previous 1,545-foot height will also be revised." So indeed we shouldn't get too excited about the prospect of reverting to the original 1,646 ft, but I had no idea that the proposed height had dropped further to 1,545 ft. I hope the developer isn't purposely staying shorter than Central Park Tower.

The website has said 1,545' for a while.

I'm guessing they're fitting more floors (or "floors") into a building that will hopefully wind up in the high 1,500's.

Something about occupied height being 1,500+ did leak but who knows if that was accurate. May as well try and top Mexico's new 1,588 foot tower in some friendly competition

while i like the height and the crown — i think its elegant, i am much, much more excited about the spectactular base. thats what we all are going to interact with day to day. giant apes aside, there will be plenty of hollywood thrillers, romances and the like filmed around the iconic base of this beauty.

The word they use for this building is grand and that’s what it is. It’s GRAND in every respect. I can honestly say that I know of no other building in the world that would surpass it in design detail, the rounded and angled curves create a visual masterpiece, a cacophony of movement!

This tower is like Christie Brinkley in her prime: pure perfection!

That’s a great comparison Christie Brinkley! Sexy looking it is, nothing sells like sex. Well, I guess there’s no law against making a skyscraper in New York have some sex appeal!

RXR and TF Cornerstone have officially filed new permits for 175 Park Avenue, a 95-story, nearly 3 million-square-foot mixed-use tower designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and stacked among heavyweights like One Vanderbilt and JPMorgan’s new headquarters, is marking a major leap forward for the long-anticipated transformation of the Grand Hyatt site. Rising directly beside Grand Central Terminal, the tower is poised to become one of Midtown’s defining vertical statements, with prior plans targeting a height of roughly 1,545 feet.

Manhattan’s next supertall, 175 Park Ave, begins to takes shape

175 Park Ave would primarily be anchored by Class A office space with a hotel occupying the upper floors, wrapped in SOM’s signature structural expression—interlaced steel columns that run the full height of the building and culminate in a defined crown. At street level, the base is engineered to respond to the complexity of the rail infrastructure below, flaring outward to create separation from Grand Central while opening up the pedestrian experience.

Public space is a major component of the plan, with roughly 25,000 square feet of elevated terraces, retail, and significant transit upgrades tied to the Midtown East rezoning framework. The development is also expected to improve circulation around one of the busiest transit hubs in the country, integrating more seamlessly with subway lines and Metro-North access.

After years of slow movement, recent filings signal renewed momentum, with early construction activity potentially beginning as soon as this summer, pending financing and tenant commitments.
