I was always under the impression it was going to be a white brick, considering the context of it’s location that’s rather disappointing.

I think the off white colour suits the neighbourhood better than straight white would. Pays homage to the limestone hulk that was there before it.

I have finally heard positive news regarding the Market Building. It seems like they have figured out some of the business issues holding it back. Likely a 2027 start.

That's in partnership with Food & Beverage Manitoba and their new food development centre/market?

Can you provide any details on what to expect?

Surely there must be more than one land involved?

I have said this before - I think it looks like a Holiday Inn with a pool complex.

I know the Ross bequest or whatever has some sort of caveat about public use, but does it feel like it would be better and healthier for this development to not have the "market" building there at all?

like would you bet that in 10 years time, the market is a thriving hub of activity?

or is it facing constant battles with safety, mostly empty of events and vendors, and constant tensions about whose responsibility fixing it is

From the provincial Budget 2026:

Quote:
New Social and Affordable Housing
Our investments in new housing through partnerships include:
Market Lands in Exchange District
(under construction)
The first of three projects planned for this site. The Manitoba government is committing $1.8 million in capital so that 48 of the 95 units can be rented as social housing.

I hope for the former but I fear it could be the latter. It seems like we're inviting a future problem that will need to be fixed. The land could have been better used for more housing. I feel as though Winnipeg doesn't have the critical mass to keep a lot of these types of spaces lively and vibrant year round. It could end up being seldom used, or worse, some kind of derelict hangout. I very much want to be wrong about this.

I think our biggest enemy has always been urban sprawl. People come into the city for work, and unless theres a festival in the exchange or a jets game, they make an immediate bee-line home from work. Need more people living and playing in the Exchange. Theres pockets of life and the East Exchange is pretty active, but even on it's best nights it's not as active as I'm sure we'd like it to be. It's still a huge improvement of the amount of people compared to the past though.

CV published a rendering of the public market/food hub in their 2025 Annual report.

You do such an amazing job around here.

I had to take my shot when I realized that you utterly and carelessly threw out a clearly incorrect date like it was nothing.
