QC is a special gem in the Canadian urban collection. Truly unique.

I can't help but love the shabby Mile End boxes. Chabanel boxes too. They are ugly but they are somewhat redeemed by their grit. I have a soft spot for massive industrial complexes. In any event, they look much better than that awful Montreal eye building near the waterfront.

Back in my Montreal days, I went to a few gigantic parties that took place in those Mile End Boxes.

I've alway loved those boxes. Much classier than the ones in Chabbynel. But I grew up next to the mile-end boxes so I'm kind of biased.

Great set of Quebec (last page) and Montreal photos - those last pics are quite colourful even in the dead of winter, a good sign for a city I feel. Colourful not just in strict sense of the word, but in terms of variety, density a good 'jumble'.

Which makes me think of San Francisco - I love this jumble - it feels unique, but I guess some cities in South America have a vaguely similar feel to the area in this pic, but not as colourful. To be fair the second shot the colour temperature dial was turned way up to Trumporange.

I really like the colours in that photo set Rico - the varying shades of bright tan and the blue/purple tones in the last. Plus the solitary CN sign in one window and the solitary man on the rooftop, well done!

The past week or so in Victoria:

For some reason I've never taken proper pics of this small block in the Fernwood neighbourhood, mainly because you have to be early to get the light right, which I wasn't. All five homes were built in 1892 as working class rental homes. Who was it again that said Victoria didn't have any old buildings outside of the Old Town in the downtown core, lol. I've come to realize that the period before WW I was the biggest boom in the City's history and there's still plenty from the 1800's.

The one true commie block building in Victoria.. called View Towers because there were supposed to be two, but after one there would never be the second. It's cast a long shadow and serious aversion ever since on tall buildings in Victoria which was still felt last week when a potential tallest building was shot down.

The Cook st shot above looks like it could be in a Melbourne, Victoria, Australia neighbourhood.

In fact, a few of those pictures look like they could be Melbourne.

giallo - haha - doesn't it though. My daughter commented when she saw that pic - "ah, I see you got a typical Fernwood shot". People attaching messages to the Fernwood Wishing Tree, girls not wearing the typical skin tight leggings you'll see in trendier neighbourhoods or when running along the coast but old fashion dresses and baggier clothes, the more second hand the better. A bit of an exaggeration but not far off. Both my kids went to Vic High school which backs onto this square and I'm only starting to recognize the huge 'cultural' impact that school has on the area and downtown. It's not known for being an academic or sports school, but an inner city arts school where teachers are just happy if the students show up.

Another thing you'll notice, that outside of tourists, Victoria and especially downtown has a distinct feminine vibe in terms of the shops, services and even locals walking around. Maybe it's just me, but it seems to be more of a female hang out/socialize place or maybe that's the way it is in cities across the country?

worldlyhaligonian - I've never been to Australia, although I've heard similar comparisons as well as too some areas of New Zealand, Portland and northern California. I don't think any of them are a close match, but for sure I can see some similarities as when looking for comparables there isn't anything in Canada that's makes sense, other than Vancouver but that's too big, modern and greener most of the year. I'd love to go to Australia one day, but to fly all that way I'd feel I'd want to see different cities and areas while my usual routine is to stay in one city the whole time.

Here's a few pic that to me that most feel like they could be in a smaller town in New Zealand or Australia, but again I don't really know not having been there.

Rimouski (Sainte-Agnès) in March - those more familiar will notice the new apartment building UC on Saint-Germain St.

Rimouski is always easy on the eyes, beautiful photo. I'm confused though, what is the brand new building that's under construction, the grey one that appears (but is not) to be connected to the large completed building? It looks it's modular construction? Right now it looks like an extremely terraced building but facing away from the waterfront. Very curious.

I feel like the only images I've seen of Rimouski makes it look like a far north town. It seems to have very wide roads, very few front or backyards large enough for a tree canopy to develop. Some of the streets don't even appear to have sidewalks. For me it always has an unwelcome feel to it. Like if you weren't born there you probably have no business stopping there. It's no Baie-Saint-Paul.

That appears to be a large affordable housing project by The Angus Group / Groupe Angus.

/\ ah thank you, fascinating. 328 new affordable rental units is massive for a smaller city.

Toronto Drew - maybe that's why I like Rimouski, it has a different look and now that you mentioned it perhaps like a remote northern community (snow and ice for part of the year help) but a large great looking northern community with lots of variety and a good downtown core.

Deserves a bump. The Queen E alone is a treasure, inside and out (I stayed there years ago... well worth the price)
