Nice to see records being broken all around! 96 was the expected max, so the extra YHZ turn plus LGA charter makes sense. Surprised LGA does charters given it's slot restricted.

AC889 was full in PY and 15/20 J. AC888 is again full in all three cabins as Ontario March Break begins tomorrow. Re: the international pax numbers, while AC going year-round helped, that's only ~6,000 monthly seats in the winter, so PD's expansion is undoubtedly the main driver there.

Plus Y189 737s vs mostly 136 seat 319s with AC made a huge difference.

The daily international pax average for February was 66/day lower than January. I suspect that if Cuba hadn't fallen apart in the second half of the month that Feb would have been about 1,800-2,000 international pax higher. PVR's issues would be another 1,000 pax.

For March, I'm guessing the loss of Cuba will translate into 8,800 fewer international pax than would have otherwise been expected, while the lingering effects of PVR probably another 2,000. 80,000 for March is probably a realistic number, especially with AF being only 4x weekly for most of the month.

Well today will now at best be tied for the record as there’s currently 5 cancellations on the day. AC to YWG and LHR are delayed and have yet to depart.

The DOT December numbers add up to 66,905 pax, which is 1,342 higher than what YOW reported for transborder that month. If December 2024's numbers had been repeated on this capacity, the seat factor for December 2025 would have been 88.95%.

Today's AC889 is a 789 - full in PY (same capacity as a 788) but 15/30 in J. AC888 is 16/20 J and 20/21 PY and is on a 788.

The aircraft doing 889 is going YVR as AC345. I guess AC342 will ferry to YYZ and a 788 will ferry in.

So I see AC 888 > AC 345 are on FIN 855, AC 342 is on FIN 839 and AC 888 is on FIN 808. No ferries showing up yet on flightaware. However, FIN 808's been at YYZ since last night after AC 851 from LHR. While flightaware says FIN 839 is currently scheduled to operate AC 342 on Thursday and Friday, AC's flight status page has FIN 847 operating AC 342 tomorrow and Friday, so 839's probably ferrying to YYZ.

AC 451 today is on the TCA 223.

Fewer US but more international passengers travelled through YOW so far this year

Mia Jensen, OBJ
March 18, 2026

The Ottawa airport is seeing fewer passengers to and from the U.S., but is experiencing an increase in international travellers.

According to data from the Ottawa International Airport Authority, the total number of travellers who have flown either to or from Ottawa — including domestic, transborder and international passengers — in the first two months of this year increased seven per cent from the year-ago period, with 810,246 travellers compared to 758,030 travellers in 2025.

Domestic travel saw a four per cent increase, from 479,478 in 2025 to 500,503 in 2026.

International travel saw the biggest increase. Last year, 126,407 passengers flew through the airport from destinations outside of Canada or the United States in January and February. This year, that number is up 33 per cent, with 168,139 recorded during the same period.

At the same time, 141,604 passengers flying either to or from the United States passed through the airport, down nearly seven per cent from the 152,145 passengers recorded during the same period last year.

The decreased number of U.S. travellers to Ottawa is something local tourism officials have been keeping an eye on.

At Ottawa Tourism’s annual stakeholder meeting in December, president and CEO Michael Crockatt said the U.S. has long been Ottawa’s strongest market when it comes to travel.

“We’re tracking Canada-U.S. sentiment and travel trends,” he said at the time. “We’ve heard that Americans no longer feel welcome in Canada and some have even felt unwelcome right here when visiting our community.”

Many Canadians rallied behind Prime Minister Mark Carney’s “Elbows Up” election slogan, choosing not to travel to the U.S.

In a report last fall, Statistics Canada said September 2025 saw a 30.9 per cent decline year-over-year in return trips from the United States by Canadians. At the same time, the number of U.S. residents travelling to Canada declined year-over-year for an eighth consecutive month.

“I know many of us feel personally about the current situation between our two countries,” said Crockatt in December. “We can’t let the ‘Elbows Up’ phenomenon alienate this market. The American people are our friends. It’s important to remain welcoming to them, above all, and to keep being active and continue to foster relationships with clients in the U.S.”

YOW has received sustained interest from various airline carriers, which have been upping their offerings with new routes to international destinations, including overseas.

In December, Porter Airlines added new flights to popular sun spots, flying direct from YOW to destinations in Mexico, The Bahamas, Costa Rica and the Cayman Islands.

In addition to Air France’s non-stop route between YOW and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, which took flight in 2023, and Air Canada’s London-Heathrow route that launched a year ago, YOW is getting another transatlantic flight. Starting May 15, Air Transat will begin flying passengers from Ottawa to London Gatwick Airport.

Is this going to bring us some extra flights today?

Suspicious package closes runway at Montreal airport
American Federal Aviation Authority reported a ground stop just after 3 p.m.

CBC News
Posted: Mar 18, 2026 4:03 PM EDT | Last Updated: 7 minutes ago

A suspicious package has reduced air traffic at Montreal's Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

A spokesperson for the airport said the number of flights into the airport has been reduced due to a "package of interest" on board an aircraft that landed in Montreal. Police are investigating.

One of two runways is closed, but the other is open, according to the spokesperson.

The American Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) said on its website that there was a "ground stop" for flights from some American airports departing for YUL, the code for the Montreal airport. The ground stop means those flights will not take off.

The FAA warning cited a bomb threat for the ground stop but a spokesperson for the Quebec provincial police force insisted there was no bomb threat. The spokersperson said police were looking into an incident at the airport.

The ground stop is slated to last until at least 5:15 p.m., according to the FAA.

^ yikes, hope it is a false alarm.

I heard an ad for Air France on the radio yesterday, Athens for $875 return starting today? My usual summer trip to Winnipeg is looking less and less fancy.

YYZ has freezing rain this morning so we’re getting a bunch of diversions. On the arrivals FIDS there’s:

AC 441 turned back to YOW
AC 401 YUL
AC 701 LGA
AC 256 YWG
AC 687 YYT

Could have been a record today if not for the cancellations. I expect a few more later today as the Albert’s clipper races through with a quick 5-10 cm accumulation.

Today’s departure count: 92

Sun flights count (both transborder & international): 14

AF on a 77W today. Last NAS run for AC (northbound was completely full) - we'll see if it returns next year. No LIR either - strange they didn't wait until after March Break for a capacity reduction.

AC889 was 17/20 J and 19/21 PY. AC888 is 16/20 J and full PY.
