Question about the G Train ...

It looks like it might be a slightly complex threading operation but could the G Train be extended to Long Island City and go underneath Vernon Boulevard?

Great minds think alike I guess.

I've put a great deal of thought into this over the last couple years of armchair planning and I think the only way to do it would be to have turnouts directly north of the Greenpoint Av station and two new parallel tubes that would cross under Newtown Creek either above or below the current Crosstown tubes, while also avoiding the East River tubes and the Queens-Midtown. It would be tricky but from an engineering perspective doable IMO. You can't have new tubes split off the current tubes north of the creek for a few reasons, one of which being it would be on a cant (banked) curve and the tubes as far as I know aren't offset to allow a flying junction. The speed and momentum entering a turnout near the bottom point of the tubes I think would also be a no-go.

Assuming the engineering could be accomplished, yes, I think splitting the G north of Greenpoint Av is doable and would create and amazing opportunity to run a branched service ideally under 21 St up to Astoria/Ditmars Steinway and LGA with LIC stops at 50 Av/Jackson (under Vernon Mall), 44 Dr (Gordon Triangle), zig zag under 44 Av and a station at 41 Av.

This branched concept would have the G split at Bedford-Nostrand and run under Washington and Flatbush all the way to Kings Plaza. The service pattern for this branched Crosstown Line would see full line service (peak 20 TPH) in Greenpoint, W'burg and Bed-Stuy and 10 TPH peak on each branch with peak service extensions past current G terminals to Jamaica-179 and Kings Highway or Av X.

Specifically to Vernon Blvd, I'm still in favor of BQX or similar solution to serve the closest waterfront areas. Ideally both could be built. Heavy emphasis on ideally.

EDIT: I'm so in my head I'm already assuming the G is back on QBL. So that would also have to be a precursor.

It's a lot easier if you don't need to run the G to Queens Blvd. Just build a flat junction at 11th St and convert the last segment of the Crosstown Line to non-revenue.

You can replace the Court Square transfer elsewhere, and the 21st St station just gets abandoned/replaced with a nearby stop on the new tunnel.

I think in four to five years the northern edge of the Manhattan Congestion Zone should go to 70th Street ... and in another 5 years it should advance to 80th and continue to jump 10 blocks north every five years.

At the same time the Congestion Zone should expand into Brooklyn, with the first phase being bordered by Atlantic, Washington, Flushing, Kent and Division Avenues.

The next phase would take in Crown Heights, Williamsburg, Hunters Point and every five years would expand to the Nassau County line.

Once Manhattan is completely in the zone it would jump to the South Bronx and advance to the city limits.

In 10 years you do Staten Island north of 278 and every five years go south till the whole of Staten Island is in the zone.

At the same time, New Jersey should start a zone that includes Newark, Jersey City and Bayonne and revenue from that could be pooled with some NYC congestion fees to improve and expand PATH, NJT Heavy Rail and Hudson–Bergen Light Rail.

A NJ Congestion Zone should probably extend no further than Elizabeth, the Meadowlands and Fort Lee.

If almost everyone is in the congestion zone, doesn't that defeat the purpose, unless there are multiple tiered zones of course

By then it becomes a way for the whole city to deal with incoming commuters and other traffic.

At the very least, Dumbo, Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn need to be in the Congestion Zone.

Congestion pricing: NYC subways saw millions more riders during Manhattan toll program’s first year, transit group finds

By Ethan Stark-Miller
Posted on March 18, 2026

The first year of congestion pricing in New York saw straphangers take more than 90 million additional subway rides than in the previous year, a new report from the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA (PCAC) found.

According to the rider advocacy group’s analysis, which it released on Tuesday, ridership on the city’s rails grew from 1.21 billion to 1.3 billion between 2024 and 2025. The bump marked a 7.7% rise — double the increase in ridership between 2023 and 2024.

‘Rail’-ly big deal: MTA requests proposals for largest-ever new subway car order to replace number line trains

By Ethan Stark-Miller
Posted on March 19, 2026

…
The shiny, technologically advanced trains, dubbed R262s, will replace the R62s and R62As — stainless steel cars with retro orange and yellow seats that have run on the 1, 3, and 6 lines since the 1980s. The RFP includes an option for another 1,250 cars, which would be swapped in for the R142s and R142As that run on the 2, 4, and 5 lines.

New York City’s next transportation revolution might be on the water
The Blue Highway program turns NYC rivers into an alternative to driving.

Fast Company

"Marcus Hoed, a Dutch immigrant who founded the New York-based shipping company DutchX in 2013, was always intrigued by the possibilities of biking—specifically cargo bikes—to fill in the same-day shipping gap in urban logistics. For the last few years, the company has billed itself as a zero-emissions shipper: a fleet of electric-powered vans that traverse roadways and bridges while cargo bikes handle the last few miles of a package’s journey.

But starting last December, DutchX found a way to dramatically cut delivery times. Typically, shipping from its Brooklyn Marine Terminal sorting facility to Midtown West would take about 75 minutes, after navigating over a bridge or via a tunnel under the East River. But now, using a ferry, the firm can do the same trip in a third of the time.

“We don’t need to drive a van into Manhattan, we don’t need to deal with parking challenges, and we don’t need to pay the fee for congestion pricing,” he says. Instead, goods are dropped off at Pier 70 and loaded directly onto a bike that can navigate Manhattan’s busy streets..."

MTA to move forward with Second Ave subway work, despite Trump's push to kill the project

By Stephen Nessen
Published Mar 20, 2026

The MTA plans to move forward with a $1.1 billion contract to start digging and building a new train station at East 106th Street for the Second Avenue subway — despite a pending lawsuit the transit agency filed against the Trump administration over an order to halt funding for the megaproject.
