I used to walk through that area quite a bit. There is nothing inspiring about it, and it needs a good shot in the arm. I agree the neighborhood needs something done that would incentivize further construction. After all, it is right on the edge of the tourist district, so there is much potential there I would guess.

It's a surprisingly boring and ugly neighborhood by NYC standards.

Do we know anything about the restaurant at the pinnacle of this building?

I just finished watching the new Gordon Ramsay documentary series on Netflix. It's about him opening up a new restaurant at the pinnacle of 22 Bishopsgate in London (~900ft tall building). Great short series btw.

At the end of the series, he teases that he's going to be traveling to NYC for his next big project. I instantly thought of 740 Eighth Ave.

Who knows, but figured it was worth mentioning here

So many details about this building that we don't know. I feel that's the way Gary Barnett likes it, even at this point in construction. And then, boom! Everything at once.

Surprisingly busy site for a Saturday. The weekends are usually dormant on most construction sites in the city.

I passed this building the other day and let out a cheer as I saw the first cladding units going up. Whatever was the delay?

^ Seems pretty standard, so much so that I didn't even expect to see any when I went by (which is why I didn't see it).

Eighth Avenue is pretty disgusting, so this could be acceptable filler if Extell eliminates the crazy neck appendage at the top of this tower.

if anybody can grab a current view i’d like to see the work going on at the top of this because the building will stop after around the 40th floor and the neck up to the observation area crown will begin and it looks like we are about at that juncture now.

no dissapointment because the cladding is exactly
what has been expected for this tourist-y vegas-y hotel.

i dk what to think about 8av around there.

its going from scubby with personality to block buster blandness.

this one will add a little jazz back at least, if only skyward.

Projects like this are why New York high-rise work is still interesting. This is not just a matter of stacking floors. You have Extell pushing a skyline-level statement, ODA shaping the design, SLCE carrying the architect-of-record role, WSP on structure, Ancora on foundations, and TEI handling a major elevator package, all on one of the most constrained, high-visibility sites in Midtown.

Whatever people think of the design, this is a serious coordination job. Hotel program, public observatory, entertainment component, theater-district site pressure, and a tower that has to read from both the street and the skyline. That is a very specific kind of New York project.

^ aah the top -- thanks there it is.

looks like they are not ready to start the observation/amusement ride neck quite yet.

a few more hotel floors to go before they start work on that.

when they get to it i think it will be super interesting to watch.

Do we know if the structure will change to steel for the neck and head, or continue as concrete?

There's still almost 200 feet of floors that have to be constructed before the "neck" starts
