I've always thought this about design pretty much all over the city, why not embrace our climate and terrain with more desert style, clay roofing etc.

Not only that, instead of planting trees that only survive through artificial watering, doing xeriscaping.

Sorry I don't see anything like this being built for $89 Million

Tourism Kamloops is calling on city hall to get on board its push for a new convention centre in the city.

The marketing agency presented results of a feasibility study to council’s Committee of the Whole Tuesday (March 31), saying it supports the need to build a new convention centre in order to prop up the Kamloops business sector.

“The convention centre in Kamloops fixes a lot of things,” Tourism Kamloops CEO Erik Fisher told council. “It helps existing businesses be more sustainable, it helps attract new businesses and it gives entities like airlines the anchor attraction to support new air routes.”

The study estimates the cost of an ideal facility – including an 18,000-square-foot ballroom, six breakout rooms and an Indigenous gathering space – at $89 million. Fisher proposed an equal three-way funding split between city taxpayers, a public-private partnership and contributions from the two upper levels of government.

A major land sale at a growing industrial development in Kamloops is being hailed as a significant milestone for the region’s economy and a signal of rising demand for industrial space.

“This sale is a strong signal of confidence in both IMIP and the Kamloops market,” O’Reilly said in a news release, adding in an interview that the transaction confirms the company’s vision for the project. “It really validates everything that we’ve been hearing and what we thought the market wanted and needed.”

The buyer has not been disclosed, but O’Reilly confirmed it is a single user that will occupy the entire site — a development he described as “a very big win for the Kamloops region.”

Details about the buyer and the planned development have not yet been released, but O’Reilly said that announcement will come directly from the purchaser when ready.

In the meantime, the transaction is already turning heads beyond the Interior.

“It’s going to raise some eyebrows throughout the Lower Mainland and the Toronto area,” he said.

It was a presentation to council, not an April fools. Just a presentation from Tourism Kamloops to plant the seed to build a convention centre. While I think it's a great idea for the city to build, this announcement is nothing more than their lame tourist attraction ideas that have materialized nothing.

It seems that no one one city council takes Tourism Kamloops seriously really. Im not 100% sure of their mandate to be honest. I have approached a few council members and tourism Kamloops as well with ideas and was basically told they were not interested. I had suggested turning the strip of Indian band land heading North ( across from Westsyde and against the hill side ) into a modern RENO style strip. Canada ( out side of Niagara falls ) has no casino style destinations. With the partnership of the Indian band it could work.

Through multiple people who have visited Kamloops their opinion was "it's dull".
If you don't like biking, hiking or golf your list of things to do are pretty small. If you're here just for the night and want to hit the clubs, you got three blocks of bars and small nightclubs (and CJ's is closed now while Underbelly is trying a new business model to run their front) and even those aren't open every night.

While insulting, I think the best way I've heard Kamloops described for tourism was "you come in for a day to buy weed, tractor parts and buy groceries at Costco."

Taking off what the place is know for and saying it's dull is pretty stupid. That would be like taking Sun Peaks and saying other than skiing and snowboarding there's nothing to do. Curious what these super fun people you speak of need to have a good time? Obviously Kamloops always needs more to do, but if you come here and say it's dull, then you're probably a pretty useless person.

Well, myself I would like to see a water park, and an out door amusement center get put in ( something like Skandia ). The water park SHOULD be a no brainer. We have such an amazing climate for it that it makes no sense the only one suggested has been a giant scam in the last 30 years.

I do think we could build a casino strip here too, and imagine the revenue for the local economy it could create.
