There was a part of the bridge that fell off about a decade ago, that was identified because the paint matched. AFAIK they didn't figure out where it fell from.

This thing is long overdue for demo.

Cue up someone to post a reply complaining about the name of the bridge, the number of lanes...

I object to the phonetic spelling, but I've been fine with the name ever since I heard a newscaster pronounce it, which made me realize that I could just call it the "Still Awesome" bridge...

Just how many people are we expecting to walk from Glenbrooke to a random warehouse district?

Yes, they could have, but that would have involved completely repairing the in-water supports and pretty much replacing the entire metal structure. If you've got a billion dollars to spend on a bridge that duplicates the pedestrian and cyclist lanes on the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge then by all means, we could leave the old bridge there.

They didn't build a 4 lane bridge to replace a 4 lane bridge for no reason. The main reason was the old one could fall down or major pieces fall off in a moderate earthquake, or as mentioned above fall off without an earthquake.

Good progress on East side pedestrian overpass bridge over Columbia St, 3/4 are now installed.
They also removed some soil to make room for on-ramp SC from Columbia St.

That particular steel type does not require paint. Rust is its own protection layer

It's called Corten Steel. CORrosion resistance TENsile strength - doesn't look quite as good, but great from a govt business case perspective!
