The way I saw it, he is guilty and should get maximum sentence, 20 years minimum.
Anyone standing or walking around with a knife ready at hand is waiting for an opportunity to use it.
hard for us to say "the way I saw it" without the benefit of all of the information, I can't say I know one way or the other, as they probably need to examine whether self defence was part of it. I remember social media at the time was full of a lot of strange speculation As far as the knife, is it possible it was a religious carry item?

Tragic situation all around regardless, hope for the best for the child growing up with this memory.

For once, I agree; the media put up photos of the happy family, and everybody saw them, and then immediately jumped to conclusions. Let the courts figure out who's to blame.

A few people who were there posted on Reddit at the time. They mentioned the defendant vaping on the patio, and the victim yelling at him to stop it. He started swinging on the defendant shortly after. I guess it'll all come out in the courts, but there's a chance that a self defense plea could avoid serious jail time.

Man arrested, charged in four downtown Vancouver stranger assaults

A man has been charged with assaulting four women in downtown Vancouver and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

According to police, a 44-year-old woman reported being assaulted by a stranger on Jan. 29 while walking near Granville and Dunsmuir streets in downtown Vancouver.

Police said that in the following weeks at least three other women reported similar assaults involving a man matching the same description as in the Jan. 29 incident.

“Each incident allegedly involved the suspect elbowing or shoulder-checking the victims while passing them on downtown sidewalks — in some cases knocking them to the ground,” said police in a statement.

Police have since been able to identify the suspect and a 28-year-old man was arrested March 5.

Dylan Brandon Gaita, 28, has been charged with four counts of assault that allegedly took place between Jan. 29 and 31.

He had one, but he didn't keep it up.

I assume you can't be a VPD community centre volunteer with a criminal record?

EDIT: All his assault charges are 2025/2026.

Yes, I am mad has ,
Once again, hundreds of thousands of dollars for the investigation and court proceedings for someone who kills in cold blood and will bullshit his way to time served (for manslaughter? Really?) and a life of freedom and free wellfare from tax payers.
In his head he will be saying "don't mess with me, god is on my side, the rest of you are bleeding heart idiots", then he will go home and admire and polish his knife collection.
Ok, I'm off to the What Is The Weather Today II for some "serenity now, serenity now!"

I've watched that video, it is the strangest thing I have ever seen, first, I don't like the person's attitude who took the video, he sounded so thrilled that he was capturing a murder (sorry manslaughter) on video and one person at the table having his coffee, not batting an eye at someone bleeding to death 5 feet away.

I think a lot of us in Vancouver are fatigued by the nonsense we see every day with the addicts and low level criminals that we have our blinders on at all times and never leave that mode of ignoring any chaos around us if at all possible. It is sad but it is the fault of our justice system and governments for letting things get the way they are.

I fully expect that if I were to stumble to the sidewalk having a heart attack in my old age some day that nobody would bother to stop to check on me and would just keep on walking. This dystopia has been created by the way Canadians have been voting for the past 50 years, with the intensity ramping up heavily in the last decade.

I was at VIFF on the weekend and noticed someone had smashed one of their windows. I wonder what that will cost the non-profit running the theatre to replace? Next door on the corner of Seymour and Davie the coffee shop had their glass door smashed. How much damage did one crazy f*ck cost businesses with that spree? Worse, they probably won't be caught and even if they were would never have to pay for it or serve any time.

the A&W on Dunsmuir has two large windows smashed and boarded too right now, it is really sad, we need to increase sentencing for property vandalism and send the message that this is not going to be tolerated

The crackheads and the glass companies are in cahoots with each other. Crackheads break glass, glass companies replace it, crackheads get a cut of the take.

I like fires.

They're so warm and the lights are all pretty. Sometimes when I light a fire I can hear the angels speaking to me. I remember when my dad's garage burned down. The angels spoke to me then too! Sometimes they make me feel good. Not like Aunt Cinthie. She was a bad lady! >:c But the angels made her house burn down and she went away. Fires are cool. Sometimes the angels tell me where to find places to start really cool fires.

Hey, want to go bike riding? I found a really neat lighter.
