Wow, I didn't realize Pattison was 97 years old!

One of Canada’s Richest Men Taps a Tax Whiz to Run His Empire
By Thomas Seal
February 27, 2026 at 3:30 AM PST

Jimmy Pattison, founder of one of Canada’s largest private companies, still comes into the office seven days a week, even at the age of 97. But day-to-day management of his sprawling conglomerate has passed to a man who’s five decades younger.

As things stand, Ryan Barrington-Foote, a low-profile accountant who rose to become president, is Pattison’s de facto successor as top executive.

Different versions of an estate plan have been ready for decades, according to one person familiar with the group’s operations, asking not to be named because the deliberations are private. Pattison has still never officially named a successor. But when he passes away, Barrington-Foote says he expects to lead a company with 59,000 employees and one of the most eclectic collections of businesses imaginable....

... The group has annual revenues exceeding C$19 billion ($14 billion) — that’s about the only piece of financial information it publicly discloses. It acquires a company or asset roughly every three weeks, former company President Glen Clark recently told a podcast....

For those who missed it, the Disney Wonder kicked off the cruise season with a very early call on February 26. The first ship of what is expected to be a record-breaking season.

The first cruise ship of 2026 is set to dock at the Port of Vancouver’s Canada Place on Feb. 26, as the port prepares for what it says will be a record cruise season...

...Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam will be the next cruise ship to visit Vancouver, arriving on April 11, with almost daily cruise ship visits from late April onwards as the Alaska season gets underway.

The final cruise ship of 2026, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Encore, is scheduled to depart Canada Place on October 13.

Nearly 360 cruise calls are scheduled to visit Vancouver this cruise season, with more than 1.4 million passengers expected to pass through Canada Place.

The Port Authority says 2026 is on track to beat the previous record set in 2024 by 5%, as well as see a 19% increase compared to last year’s 300 cruise ship calls and nearly 1.2 million passenger visits...

Fantastic news for downtown businesses.

With a record-breaking cruise season and the World Cup, Vancouver is going to be absolutely buzzing this summer.

~150 jobs in Vancouver

TikTok to continue operating in Canada, subject to safety conditions

TikTok is being allowed to continue its operations in Canada after the government wrapped up a national security review.

Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says the decision hinges on key conditions, including for TikTok to bring in stronger protections for minors and the personal information of all Canadians.

The minister says the decision will also save jobs by ensuring TikTok Canada has a physical presence in the country.

The move reverses a 2024 order for TikTok to close its offices in Canada due to national security concerns.

Last month, a Federal Court judge set aside an order for the social media company to wind down operations in Canada, which meant it could keep running its offices while the government conducted another review.

Joly says the government will track compliance and seek other measures to make social media safer for young Canadians.

old news now. I wonder if they will try a store here in Canada or just a collection at Aritzia. I know Fred Segal had a big cult following and at one point had stores in Japan.

Aritzia buys rights to U.S. fashion retailer Fred Segal, leases iconic Melrose site

Aritzia Inc. announced Thursday that it had purchased U.S. fashion brand Fred Segal. Vancouver-based Aritzia would not disclose the value or terms of its deal but said it includes Fred Segal's intellectual property.

Has anyone else noticed how quickly gas stations are disappearing? I saw the PetroCanada in Marpole just closed (weird mid-block location at 65th and Granville) and the Chevron at Arbutus and Valley shuttered recently. The Esso at Burrard and Broadway is slated to go with the PetroCanada at Burrard and 2nd soon to follow.

While I'm sure this is a some city planners' 🞵🞵🞵 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵, it's going to be interesting to see where all the ICE vehicles in the CoV fill up.

Planners leave it to the market. There were 50 gas stations Downtown in 1960, and now there's one. Vehicle owners seem to survive OK.

It can be true that certain gas stations are not very revenue positive and are coming near the end of their life and require huge costs to fix their underground tanks.

Think those EVs have been around for 2 years, so they might have been in the works around 2022-2023, which is also interesting considering the rezoning for 4615 Arbutus St was officially received by the City in October of 2025. Could be that they didn't expect to move so quickly to redevelop, whoever 4615 Arbutus Development Inc is.

It was approved in January at Public Hearing, so I gather the gas station is closed? I don't drive down that way anymore.

4615 Arbutus Development Inc was registered in 2024, the same year the site sold for $14m. As the architects are Perkins + Will, it might it be a Bonnis project. The same architects designed the 6-storey rental at 4635-4675 Arbutus for Constantine Dino Bonnis. That was rezoned in 2024.

Chard sees pivot to rental as a permanent shift in Vancouver

In a recent interview with RENX, Chard Development president and CEO Byron Chard said the firm is diversifying its approach to development and is working on several rental projects in the Lower Mainland and Victoria as it moves away from condos, for now.

"We see rental housing as essential infrastructure," Chard said. "It's not a temporary response to market conditions.

"We saw a strong opportunity to differentiate Chard in the marketplace, to not only offer the development construction, but also offer asset management and property management."
Quote:
Chard said another key to managing through the condo downturn is to partner with not-for-profits on housing projects, including with BC Housing. "This has also become a core function."

The strategy doesn't mean a total shutdown on condos, however. “I’d say, for us right now, it is an unstable political environment, and... that means that we need to focus on stable asset classes and ultimately provide stable communities."

He said serving as rental building managers is also equipping the company with valuable information about renters and their buildings that is helping to shape the design and amenity packages as they move forward.

"We get to then reassess our decisions that we made and be held accountable to them and so we can improve the next asset, the next building, and have that continuous improvement."
Quote:
Chard said the firm has learned that fast, convenient elevators which properly service residents, maintenance and moving has proven to be important to renters. "We view elevators as a true amenity to the building. It's not just a requirement. That's (considered an) amenity if you can offer really good elevator speed and service."

He said clean, functional, accessible garbage and recycling areas are also important to residents.

Security and safety features are now fundamental, he said. "How do we make sure that our tenants’ security... is always top of mind for us so that's never something our tenants need to worry about?"

Feedback shows renters also want amenities that reduce their costs outside of the home. That means having high-quality fitness spaces in the building and spaces within homes that are convenient and professional for working at home.

Moreover, integrated coffee shops within the building are another desired amenity. "We're going to have a partnership with Forecast coffee connected right into the lobby (at Cascades) that our tenants are going to be able to enjoy."
Quote:
Big picture, getting back into the condo market will require some adjustments in the market. Chard is tracking a few key factors that will guide the overall approach to housing.

"No. 1 is immigration numbers, and No. 2 is... job creation," Chard said, explaining he keeps a close eye on overall economic activity and monitors which industries are advancing in the region as part of provincial GDP growth.

Homes service that growth, he said. More jobs mean more people will come and they'll need places to live.

Chard said the company's view on condo development is also shifting. That could mean smaller buildings.

“Maybe for concrete, that's 80 to 100 units where we don't necessarily need the pre-sales that we previously required,” he said. “We could be proceeding on an equity basis and really delivering (condos as) end-user product."

Yes, while I was being facetious there could be quite a large urban issue if too many gas stations leave the market while the majority of vehicles on the road are ICE. From simple things like lines of car blocking streets (I've seen this in Richmond) to people having to drive to the suburbs to gas up (hardly "green").

Lots of rental, good news. Smaller condo buildings, makes sense. What I would really like to see (and maybe this is something that could happen in the 'Village'-designated areas in the ODP) are small lot, single-stair multi-family buildings with larger, and more family-oriented units. I think that these would be quite desirable, and wouldn't require major investment and long timelines. I could see this the best path for more ownership homes, as the pre-sale issue would be minimized.

No news about Vancouver projects.

Major transactions, projects continue as CF overhauls portfolio: CEO

“Two years ago, our portfolio was primarily retail and enclosed shopping centres across the country along with office in major cities across the country,” Iacono told RENX in an exclusive interview.

“During the pandemic, we realized that being overweight in office and retail was a little bit more challenging, to put it bluntly.

“So coming out of it, we decided that we were going to be more exposed to industrial and multifamily. And over the last couple of years, we've sold a certain number of office and retail assets in order to be able to generate resources to be able to redeploy into both multifamily and industrial.”

Cadillac Fairview is wholly owned by the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan and has assets under management of $26 billion. It manages approximately 28 million square feet of leasable space at 52 properties across Canada.

In the coming years, Iacono said he would like to see Cadillac Fairview’s portfolio be comprised of 15 to 25 per cent industrial and 20 to 25 per cent multifamily properties.
