I'll have to see that with my own eyes. Just looking at the picture, the red brick podium seems to date it by several decades and not in a good way. It looks quite different from the other buildings in Kings Wharf.

It’s impressive in person, art deco vibe, makes me think of the entrance to a grand railway station.

It's also grey, not red. It looks genuinely good in person, so far anyway. The renderings (check the previous page in this thread) give me high hopes for the rest of the project as well.

The tower design is conspicuously bland by comparison, which is interesting.

I see it in person frequently, most recently last night. I think it looks terrific.

Yes, by some unfortunate twist of fate, I found myself nearby here this AM, so I swung by to get a better look. What the naked eye sees was far different than what the pic provided. Not red brick, and the brick used seems unlike any I’ve seen previously. I couldn’t stop to get a better look but it seemed to be brick in a mix of sizes, some of which looked quite long and narrow in height. An interesting treatment and rather handsome.

Passing through that area it is interesting how each building has its own podium treatment. The first two on the left as you enter both use a square-cut stone cladding but even those are slightly different, and the other buildings have unique treatments as well, a nice touch.

I couldn't believe my eyes reading this - a positive statement from Keith?! I'll have to check this out myself, the pictures do look fantastic. I hate that it's relieving to see some simple, high quality development as of late.

The Kevel is now occupied. The next building (Brightwork) is technically not approved for construction yet but they have been working on the below grade portion since it is connected to the future emergency access ramp.

Halifax Planning Case - 2023-00336

I have quite a few angles on my blog. A more unique angle just opened on Patuo'qn Street. The tower lines up nicely with the the recently daylighted Sawmill River.

Nice photos. It looks like this phase and the next one are a notch or two above the previous construction, which wasn't bad. I like the large windows below the street behind Brightwork which seems to have some kind of commercial space, plus the boardwalk.

You can almost see the trends of the Halifax economy--or at least the developer's fortunes--over the last two decades enshrined in Kings Wharf.

Last time I passed by the Kevel it wasn't done, but the street-facing elements looked excellent. (The tower is quite bland, but oh well.) I'm really pleased to see the quality, but I also sort of wish this wasn't tucked away at the edge of downtown Dartmouth. This is the kind of street presence that would really stand out in downtown Halifax.

In any case, it adds quite a bit to the King's Wharf area.

I know what you mean. I'm good with a relatively bland tower when they're giving such nice street-level design. Hopefully, this kind of quality continues to spread in HRM.

Halifax Examiner headline: HRM allows developer Francis Fares to flout occupancy rule at King’s Wharf
apparently the 2nd exit is the issue.

The city allowed a temporary measure to be put in place so that the Kevel could be occupied. They put a little floating bridge down under the tracks. It connects from the little water access they have as soon as you go over the tracks and goes under the rail and pedestrian bridge and comes back up to the boardwalk in front of the little public parking lot on the Alderney side. Apparently this is sufficient until they build the second access as part of the next building.

So a floating pedestrian bridge, be interesting in an emergency.

Sam Austin - March 2026 E-Newsletter

Apparently the occupancy permit has not been issued for The Kevel. The people that are living there now are doing so illegally. The building is in good condition. The issue is the second access point as required by the development agreement. Bylaw enforcement has an open investigation on the matter. This is a non-political enforcement issue and orders or fines might be issued.

I do appreciate Sam's taste in photography. That was a pleasant surprise.

Jeebus, Sam needs an editor in the worst way. All this massive missive lacks is a description of what he had for lunch each day. He must think he is getting paid by the line. Brevity, man, brevity!
