Smile NEW YORK | 220 11th Avenue | FT | 9 FLOORS

One of Zaha Hadid's Final Buildings Will Rise in West Chelsea

The visionary architect designed the mixed-use building before her untimely death

Quote:
Here's some big starchitecture news: The Moinian Group announced today that it is collaborating on a new building, set to rise at 220 11th Avenue, with none other than Zaha Hadid Architects. According to a press release, the building was one of the last designs that Hadid personally worked on before her untimely death earlier this year.

Moinian has apparently been working with the firm since last year on the building, and the shape it will take—steered, no doubt, by Hadid herself—will be a mixed-use building, with "signature loft-like condominium residences," along with a yet-to-be-determined cultural institution that the developer hopes will be a "hub" for the neighborhood. Construction is expected to begin early next year, and sales will also launch sometimes in 2017. The site's location is only a few blocks from Hadid's other New York City condo project at 520 West 28th Street, which is still under construction.

In the two months since the world lost the visionary architect, her work has been celebrated in many remembrances, including a retrospective during the Venice Architecture Biennale. Her firm, Zaha Hadid Architects, has also pressed on, opening the first posthumous project from the icon (a marine terminal in Italy). The new NYC building will join the many other projects that Hadid designed before her death, including skyscrapers in Miami and Milan, a new airport terminal in Beijing, and the controversial Al Wakrah stadium in Qatar.

Just some extra info:

One of the last designs from late British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid will be realized in New York. Working with developers The Moinian Group, Hadid and her firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) were commissioned more than a year ago to provide apartments and space for a “world-class” cultural institution at 220 Eleventh Avenue in West Chelsea, Manhattan.

“We must invest in cultural spaces—they are a vital component of a rich urban life and cityscape, they unite the city and tie the urban fabric together,” said Hadid in 2015.

Hadid’s long-term colleague and Partner at ZHA Patrik Schumacher spoke of the firm’s joy to be working in a city that played a big part in Hadid’s life. “As the world celebrates Zaha’s remarkable legacy,” he said in a press release, “we are delighted to be announcing her unique collaboration with The Moinian Group for New York, a city that greatly influenced her creative work.”

Hadid’s design aims to evoke the loft-like residences that are commonplace in the Chelsea. A coterie of penthouse apartments and a cultural institution will also be embedded into the project. At the time of writing, The Moinian Group are in talks with institutions regarding residency at the site.

“We are deeply honored to develop one of Zaha’s final creations and cement her astonishing legacy forevermore here in Manhattan. She was a special woman and a friend who we all miss very much,” said Mitchell Moinian of The Moinian Group.

The Moinian Group’s release mentions that Hadid visited New York many times and was able to develop an understanding of the city, its values and architectural heritage. As a result, the Group said, much of Manhattan’s vernacular typologies and the area’s way of life have formed her design and approach for 220 Eleventh Avenue.

Moinian Group Provides Updates on Spec Office Project in Manhattan

Quote:
Locally based developer The Moinian Group has provided updates on its speculative office project at 220 11th Ave. in the West Chelsea area of Manhattan. The project was originally announced in February 2020, but construction was delayed until early 2022. The foundation of the nine-story, 210,000-square-foot building is now complete, and Moinian Group has appointed Newmark as the new leasing agent. Designed by David Burns Studio Architecture, the building will feature two sculptural terraces, a 12,470-square-foot landscaped rooftop and two penthouse terraces totaling 2,200 square feet. At street level, an 11,920-square-foot duplex space offers the potential for flagship retail or flexible commercial use. An expected completion date was not announced, but the project team says that a prospective anchor tenant can commence its interior buildout within 18 months of lease execution.
