A-50 was a bit different because it requires cuts in depth of 20 ~ 30 m. Nowhere around Hawk Lake is that needed.

Oh by the way, despite the deep cut, MTQ still uses a 14.8-m median on A-50. No excuse for M.T.I. to use narrow median with jersey barrier around Hawk Lake.

The length will be higher than 20km right? Plus I think one or two interchanges in there as well.

500 million to complete the twinning (including a couple of simple interchanges) seems like a perfectly cromulent number.

I do wonder how much M.T.I. has to pay to expropriate cottages…

Although it does go to Selkirk, so I dunno. The Selkirk corridor would be the solution there.

#7 has a lot of traffic going to the quarry. So makes sense than the twinned section goes that far. #7 is slated for major rehabilitation/reconstruction starting next year IIRC. Both NB and SB through the entire twinned section.
That's good news. It's badly needed as there are big chunks of pavement missing around the seam between the 2 lanes throughout much of that 15 km length from hwy 67 to the perimeter. There was a major rehab completed back in 2012-13 for both northbound and southbound hwy 7 along the same stretch but those gravel trucks travelling to and from the quarry cause a substantial amount of wear and tear. I've heard there are 200+ loads taken from the quarry each day!

I wonder how much money they are spending on the hwy 7 rehab? Any ideas?

Re: PTH 1 twinning. I'm going by people telling me things. People who are in the industry but not directly the people doing the work. But people who are directly adjacent to the people doing the work.

Hoping its on the smaller end of that scale.

Like its not in the zero to $100 million range. Not in the $100 to $500 million range. But in the over $500 million range.

Its about 18km from freedom road to the weigh scale. Hoping they do interchange for the whole thing. Thats only like 3 interchnage and the overpass. But again going by the price tags for say CPT in the City. That gets the twinning closer to the billion dollar price tag IMO.

The 6 km in Ontario from the border to the Gundy Lake road cost $36 million. There's something fishy going on in Manitoba.

If the route for the twinning goes north of Barren Lake, the distance will increase a bit.

Maybe material costs will be a big factor. The ON side can just blast away and get all the road bed they need, right on site, or stockpile it. The MB side once you get past the two hills just east of Westhawk are low lying, without a lot of blasting opportunities, so you are trucking in everything.

Let's wait to pass judgement on the pricing until they get a bit more distance to make it a more statistically reasonable comparison.

There must have been a reason they choose to stop at Gundy road. Possibly because it turns into a giant swamp just east of there.

East of there, some cottagers start complaining about the proposed routing: https://keephwy17north.ca/

This is what $252.4M gets for a brand new highway in Nova Scotia:

^ you love to trot this project out. However here are the quick facts from your link:

Quote:
Quick Facts:
the project was announced in 2017 and construction began in 2019
eight new bridges and nine roundabouts were built
This was tendered at least 6 (or possibly 9) years ago, and pre-covid. It sounds like a great deal, but we would need some factoring of the numbers to account for the rather extreme inflationary pricing increases over the time since 2017. Not withstanding the various other differences in geography between NS and MB.

Actually, can someone pull up the maps for the surface and bedrock geology of the area? Borehole data will be a plus.

Why so bitter?? Especially as a moderator, it is very inappropriate to tell someone to FO. I see you were also using quite aggressive language towards those folks in Vancouver/Victoria commenting on their weather.

I think we can all agree we’d like to see some more transparency from MTI on the status of large projects. Why don’t they all have their own website with the background docs and regular updates? Then we’d at least know what we’re arguing about

Haha well they do have a website with docs. But it's years old for most projects now.

Still early days on the PTH 59/52 twinning. At least some news on the project continuing to move forward. Thanks for sharing the update.
